PUBLICHEARING 1.DenePancheri notpresent/shewillemailhercomments. 2.GailOchi GailteacheschemistryatSkylineHighSchool.Studentshavetoexperiencechemistryinorderto learnit.Gailthereforespendsalotofmoneyonsuppliesandequipmentforherclass.Shehasalreadyspent herclassroomallotment;theschoolallotmentinadditiontoherpersonalmoneyisnecessaryinorder purchasethesuppliesandequipmentsheneedstoteachthisclass.Mrs.OchiwroteagrantforanewŒ,“ whichshereceived.GailthencontactedtheEducationFoundationasaresourcetoraisefundsforher chemistryclass,becauseteachershavelittleornotimetofundraiseorwritegrants.TheEducation Foundationwasalotofhelpinraisingfundsanditwasveryeasyforhertouse.GailOchiadvocatesforthe districttomaintaintheEducationFoundation.Theyareagoodfitforgrantwriting. 3.MargeFoster‘MargetaughtandservedasanadministratorforDistrict91.Margenowservesontheboard ofdirectorsfortheEducationFoundation.Marge,throughthefoundation,wasabletoraisemoneytocreate andprintthenewteacherrecruitmentpacket;theyhaveraisedmoneytoofferdualcreditclassesinthehigh Page of SUP0809BRDMIN schools;grantsforindividualteachers;passthroughmoneyfortheschools.TheFoundationhasbroughtin over400ktotheDistrict,apaidpersonisvitaltomaintainthislevelofcontribution.Therearealotof volunteersthatmakeupthefoundation,butapaidpersonneedstobemaintained.TheProfessional TechnicalHighSchoolalsobringsinalotofmoneytotheschooldistrict.TheProfessionalTechnicalProgram supportsthesportsmedicineprograms.Please7š“x·cuttheEducationFoundationortheProfessional TechnicalHighSchool. 4.TerryFrickey TreasurerfortheEducationFoundationforDistrict91alsoworkswiththeWilliamMaeck foundation,whogivesgrantsthroughtheFoundation,andwho,in2007‘wentinto6schoolsandgave approximately$17,000.In2008,theygranted$47,000to12schools.Thatgrantmoneyprovidedalotof th extraslikereadingmaterial,playgroundequipment,4graderendezvous,USUfamilysciencenight,rocket project,encyclopedias,specialneedsequipment‘thingsthatschools7š“x·havemoneyfor.Withoutthe effortsoftheEducationFoundation,thesegrantswouldnothavebeenpursued.Youcannotfillthisposition onavolunteerbasis. 5.CamiSmith HasbeentheDirectoroftheEducationFoundationforthepast2yrs.Camihasbeeninvolved withtheFoundationforthepast8years.Passthroughmoneyisoneof7z­·©z-·x­favoredbenefits,asthis moneyisdesignatedforspecificclassrooms(ie...Kaides),in2007,thefoundationbroughtinover$83K,in 2008,theybroughtinover$85K.Theseclassroomsarenotreceivingthesameamountclassroom donationsanddonorsneedtobeencouragedtodonatewithalotmoreeffort.TheFoundationhasalso raised$13KfromtheVisaPlexmovietickets;aswellasdonationsfromtheOfficeDepotdropsataround$ 22K;theFoundationprovidesalotofhelpwiththeOctober-š“E;©;“-;“·w;last2yrsover12khascomein forOctoberInservice;inthelast2yrs,over$400khascometotheclassroomsthroughtheFoundation. thefoundation,CamiprovidedcopiesofthoselettersofsupporttotheBoard Therearemanysupportersof ofTrustees. ‘Wantstoknowiftheboardandtheadministrationhasconsideredtheconsolidationofschool 6.KenWatts districtsof91and93?Herealizesthattherewillbenosavingsintheshort·;©’“,Ò·inthelongtermthis potentialtosavealotofmoney.Healsobelieves willprovidealotofsavings.Overthelongtermthereisa thatthiswillhelptoconsolidatethehighschools.Withaconsolidation,youcanhaveonehighschoolfocus onscienceandtechnology,oneonbusiness,accounting,marketing,&liberalartsandenhancelearningfor thestudents. Howell‘AnnhasbeentheDirectorofEnrollmentServicesatISUforthepast12yrs;Sheusedtowork 7.Ann for5 sheiscurrentlythechairfortheEducationFoundation.AnnhasworkedwiththeEducation Foundationonprojectsthatz“-ŒÒ7;“·w;scholarshipluncheon,collegepathways,andthe’䚩x­ scholarship,alloftheseprojectsencouragetheyouthofthecommunitytocontinueontocollege.The EducationFoundationplaysabigroleintheseevents.Theadministrationofthisfoundationmakesalotof thingshappen.ThemoneyspenttoruntheFoundationmakesmoremoneyforthecommunityinthelong runandtrulyhelpsthekidsinthecommunity. 8.GlennWard‘studentatISU;hasastepdaughteratERJH,andanadopteddaughteratTempleview ElementarySchool,andhisspouseisadistrict91employee.Withthiscurrentfinancialcrisis,thethreeday furloughthroughextendingtheChristmasvacationseemslikeagreatidea.Wantsthatenteredintorecord. 9.HeidiGummel‘Ishererepresentingthe’䚩x­scholarshipfundfortheFoundation;shehasvolunteered for4yrs;andhasbeenthechairpersonforthecommittee.Fouryearsago,themayorforgedarelationship fortheforgottenmiddlekids.Thisscholarshipempowerskidstomoveontohighereducation.Arecent recipientofthisscholarshipiscurrentlyatISUstudyingnursing,ontracktobecomeaRegisteredNurse.The moneyhasbeenhelpfulandthescholarshiphasbenefiteddistrict91kids.Over91scholarshipsinthesumof $76,500hasbeenawarded.Twelvetoseniorsandtwelvetostudentsingrades8‘11.TheCšÒ“7·zš“x­role Page of SUP0809BRDMIN intheraisinganddistributingoffundsissignificant.Theyarethegoverningbody.Thea䚩x­Scholarship Fundgrowseveryyearduetothe7z©;-·š©x­efforts. 10.MarciSolecki‘notpresent 11.BeckyForcey‘notpresent 12.MichelleCook‘LibrarianatSkylineHighSchoolisveryconcernedaboutlosinglibraryaides.Shefeelsthatif everyoneweretogiveuppartoftheirmedicalstipend,theycouldsavesomeofthejobsonthelistforcuts. Itisworthgivingupthisbenefitinordertosavetheseprogramsforthekids.Thesamewiththethreeday furloughthatissomethingthateveryonecandistributeinordertosavetheprograms.Shecannotseetaking awayfromtheclassrooms. 13.DeniseSeer‘First,shewantstothankteachers.Sheisveryproacademia.Shefeelsthatwhatismost importantforourkidsisnotsports.AtEagleRock,theNewERAprogramforkidswhoareatriskorwho 7š“x·fitinthetraditionallearningmodel.ThisisatransitionalprogramandMrs.Thielhasbeenvery encouragingtoher­š“x­education.Hehasbeenabletomoveintothemainstream.Thisprogramis amazinganditreallydoeshelp.Henowhasagoaltogotocollegetobeaveterinarian.Sheissogratefulfor theseteachers‘theyareamazingpeople.Pleasekeepacademicsasapriority. 14.ShellyThiel‘twoyearsagoWendyCavancametotheboardforthefundingtostartNewERA.Theboard believedinitandgaveitachance.Lastyear,Shellypresentedhersuccessestotheboardoftrustees. Tonightsheishereaskingforsupportforherprogram.Wearehereinabudgetemergency.Sheteaches20 studentsfiveperiodsperday.Shehasthemallday.WearealsoinanewERAemergency.NewERAdoes thth gradetoa2.3GPAinthe7grade;anotherfrom improvegrades;onestudentwentfroma0.1GPAinthe6 a2.7GPAtoa3.7GPA;andyetanotherstudentfroma1.8GPAtoa3.7GPA.Notonlyaregradesimproved, th gradeandhasmissedonly2daysthisyear; butattendanceaswell.Onestudentmissed25daysin6 th anotherhadmissed89daysinthe6grade,and17daysthisyear.Gradesandattendanceareonlyaportion ofwhattheydoinnewERAtheylearnaboutgoalsetting,dreambuilding,timemanagement,selfesteem, selfmotivation,habits,teamwork,howtomake,andhowtobeafriend.5š“x·cutthisworthwhile Shehasbeenreceivingapplicationsfortheprogramforstudentsnextyear.Oneparentwrotea program. note‘{w;7the“š·;|``mysonfeltlikeafreakhehasnofriends,hespendsalotoftimealone.Sociallyhe andfittingin.Ifearforhim,Ifearthatteacherswillbemean isamess.Hehasahardtimeexpressinghimself tohimandthathewillcryandbemadefunofbystudentsaswellasbyteachers.Heisbright,hethinks andmadefunofandlost.Ifearthatifwe7š“x·help differentlythenwedoandthatiswhatgetshimleftout, himwemayendupburyinghimbecauseofhimtakinghislifeoutoflonenessandfrustrationwithfittinginto u|(MaryAnnaskedforacopyof thisbigbadworldthatwelivein.IfeelnewERAwillbegoodforhim comments) 15.MarkThiel‘HeretosupportnewERA.Thisprogramreachesthosekidswhoareatriskwho7š“x·havethe supportathomeorforthosekidswhothinkdifferently.ThinkingdifferentinIdahoFallsisnotviewedwell. IsaacNewton,Beethoven,andEinsteinallthoughtdifferentlyandtheyalladdedtosociety.Thisprogram grabsthosekidswhocanveeroffandgoadifferentdirection.Atthisage,withthisprogram,youcangrab thesekidsandmakeadifferenceintheirlife.Itischeapertograbthemnowthroughthisprogram,thento sendthemalongandpayforincarcerationslater.Also,forpublicrecord,wouldliketostatethatreducingto a2dayfurloughandreductioninthemedicalstipendseemslikeagoodidea. 16.GregLosinski‘parentof3childrenindistrict.Hehasbeenaneducatorhiswholelife,hiswifeisaneducator andheisalsoasubstituteKindergartenteacher.Whenheseesthenumbershecannotfathomlosing classroomaides.Thisisnotgoingtobepopular,butthesacredcow‘lifetimesportsversusathleticsmustbe addressed.Weshouldpromotecocurricularlifetimesportsthatdevelopteambuildingandgoodhealthy recreationversusathleticsthatcandestroyaperson.Thenumbersinextracurricularexpensesarehuge Page of SUP0809BRDMIN versusaidesandinstructionofthecore.Wehavetogobacktothecore.Extracurricularactivitiesarenice; butwecannotsacrificethecore. 17.MayraTakata‘AparentwhovolunteersatboththeElementaryandHighSchools.Feelsthatteacher salariesshouldnotbecut.Afraidthatbycuttingsalarieswecannotattractgoodteachers.Weneedaidesfor ourteachers!Wouldliketochallengeboardtosolicitmorevolunteers‘itishardertovolunteerathigh school.Mayrawouldalsoliketovolunteerinhigherlevelstowritegrantsforthedistrict. 18.BryceBurtenshaw‘Has3kidsindistrict91.Abigconcernforhimisasafeenvironment.Hewouldliketo maintaintheSchoolResourceOfficersinthesecondaryschools.Theirpresenceisadeterrent.Healsofinds itabsurdtothrowtheburdenofthefinancialproblemontheteachers.Thisburdenneedstobespread throughoutthepatronsofthedistrict.Theproportionofsacrificeisenormous.Youareaskingteachersto give$10andpatronstogive10cents.Thisisthewrongapproach.Reducingthemedicalstipendand imposinga3dayfurlough7š;­“x·makealotofsense. 19.Mr.Ghandi‘astheboarddeliberatestheschoolbudgetandfinances,pleaseconsiderthesuperior alternativemathcurriculumintheelementaryschoolsof SingaporeMath.Itisconsiderablycheaperthan Saxtonmath.Theswitchwillhelpfortheshortfallofbudget.Ashortcomingofcurrenteducationisof breadth.SingaporeMathprovidesexamplesfromeverydaylifeexperience.Saxtonintroducesandthen forgetsforafew7䭓{z“m¦š©;coversatopicthoroughly.AdoptSingaporefortheentiredistrict.The stateonlysetstheminimumstandards.Wecansetthemhigher.D91mustseizetheopportunitytoraise standardsinthesediretimes.Usethisopportunity. 20.DarylSnyder‘TheEducationFoundationprogramalignswiththeDistrictContinuousImprovementPlan. Shehasaheartfeltthankstoallwhocameinsupportofthefoundationtonight.Wehavemadeadifference inthecommunity.Weareasolutiontorunfundsthroughusforclassrooms. 21.RebeccaCasper‘describesherselfasarabidvolunteerwithfourkidsindistrict91.Encouragestheboardto notdiscountprivate­šŒÒ·zš“­“·w·ofprivatedollarsandhours.Ifallofyourvolunteersbilledyouattheir professionalrates,youwouldbeamazed.YetallofthisiscoordinatedbytheEdFoundation.Shehasnot beenapproachedbyprincipalsaskingforhelp.Whenshew­“­w;hashelped.Hasneverreceiveda newsletterfromprincipalsaskingformoneyorforhelp.ShehasneverbeenaskedforSupervisorsofthe toask.Clubsponsors,ISATproctors,tutorscan lunchroom‘youcangetvolunteersforthat‘butyouhave allbeparents.Privatesolutionsrequireacoordinator.Urgeyoutothinkoutsideofthetraditionalfunding formula.Bebold. 22.DaveHeath‘patronwith2studentswhohavegraduatedfromdistrict91andheisproudtobean employeeofthedistrict.Thisisanowinposition.Noonewantstocuttheirprogram.Confidentthatthe BoardandtheSuperintendentwiththeIFEAwillcometoasolution.TheFoundationhasbeenagood programforProjectLeadTheWay(PLTW)‘theyhavebeenveryhelpfulwithsupport.Themoneyspent generatesmuchmoremoneyfortheclassrooms.TheFinancialemergencyhaspeopleleeryandconcerned. ofafurloughormedicalstipend. Teacherswilldotheirpart.Wecansaveprogramsthroughourdonations ThinksthatdeclaringaFinancialEmergencyistoonew.Maybewewillneedtodothisinthefuture.Hopes thatinnegotiationsthiscanbefiguredout.Worriedaboutequityofthecutsfornewteachers.Doit proportionally.Thesilverliningistofindthebiggerissue,whichisourlegislatureandourgovernor.Has anothercommentaboutaproposedPolicytobereadattheboardmeetingnextweek‘KeyControlPolicy.
