HomeMy WebLinkAbout2013_12_20 Board Minutesi BOARD OF TRUSTEES -- SPECIAL WORK SESSION DISTRICT OFFICE BOARD ROOM — 12:00 P.M. 690 JOHN ADAMS PARKWAY DECEMBER 20, 2013 Present from the Board of Trustees: Lisa Burtenshaw, Chair Dave Lent, Vice Chair Deidre Warden, Treasurer Bryan Zollinger, Trustee Larry Haws, Excused Present from the Administration: George Boland, Superintendent Lisa Sherick, Assistant Superintendent Trina Caudle, Assistant Superintendent Carrie Smith, Director of HR & Finance Gail Rochelle, Director of Student Achievement & School Improvement Camille Wood, Director of Technology Services Margaret Wimborne, Coordinator of Communications & Community Engagement Debbie Wilkie, Recording Clerk Board Chair, Lisa Burtenshaw, called the meeting to order at 12:05 p.m. and led the Pledge of Allegiance. ADOPT AGENDA Trustee Lent made a motion to adopt the agenda as presented. Trustee Zollinger provided the second. Motion carried 3 ayes, 0 nays. (Trustee Warden arrived shortly afterwards.) WORK SESSION a. Review & Discussion of Board Policies i. 601.0 - Curriculum Philosophy ii. 604.0 — Curriculum Development/Implementation/Evaluation iii. 610.2 — Public Complaints About Instructional Materials Superintendent Boland led a discussion of Board Policies 601.0, 604.0 and 610.0 reviewing the District's curriculum philosophy, development and implementation. A discussion was held about the need for more training for teachers and parents to help them access the information available on the district website. Representative Janet Trujillo was in attendance for this discussion but had to leave before being able to provide comments. b. Report & Discussion of December 4, 2013 Legislative Luncheon A discussion was held regarding the Legislative Luncheon held on December 4, 2013 at Falls Valley Elementary in Bonneville School District 93. Trustees Lent, Warden and Zollinger along with district curriculum coordinators Jennifer Jackson and Todd Brown attended the luncheon and were able to visit with local legislators about 12/20/2013 Board Minutes Page 1 of 2 educational issues for the upcoming legislative session. Trustee Lent stated there were some good conversations overall and said he would like District 91 to host the event in the future. c. Report & Discussion of Research Trip to Napa Valley Unified School District Superintendent Boland led a panel discussion regarding the research trip to Napa Valley Unified School District in California. The panel, two middle school principals, two elementary principals and one high school principal, went to see the New Tech Network model in order to provide feedback and answered questions about moving towards district -wide implementation of a similar model. The panel stated they saw some really good strategies and it is always good to learn new ways to improve but stated, as a district, we are already doing a lot of them. Trustee Lent made a motion to adjourn. Trustee Warden provided the second. No further discussion. Motion carried 4 ayes, 0 nays. Meeting adjourned at 1:53 PM. 12/20/2013 Board Minutes Page 2 of 2
