HomeMy WebLinkAbout2001_02_27 Board MinutesIDAHO FALLS SCHOOL DTSTRICT NO. 91 BOARD OF TRUSTEES Board Meeting Minutes February 27, 2001 7:30 P.M. -Good News School Program --Idaho Falls High School The program included visits to several classrooms where teachers conducted mini-classes in their subject area and choir students sang the National Anthern. Lee and Connie Brundage were honored for their very active support of students, Idaho Falls High School and the District #91 school system. Special Orders of the Day Emissary of Excellence Judi Petersen, instructional aide and school lunch server at Temple View Elementary School was honored for her service to the students by the Board of Trustees and Principal Dave Schjeldahl. The Board of Trustees honored Idaho Falls High School Math and Science teacher Suzanne Wisner as Idaho's Presidential Award recipient for Math and Science. Mrs. Wisner will travel to Washington DC on March b-10 to receive this national award Adoption of the Agenda It was moved by Ernest Jensen and seconded by Robert Collette to adopt the agenda with no changes. Motion passed. Consent Agenda It was moved by Robert Collette and seconded by Ernest Jensen to approve the minutes of the February 13 Board meeting with one correction. Motion passed. Matching Funds -February 13: Trustee Robert Collette preferred that the District pay 1.00% of the costs for computer equipment rather than have patrons pick up the difference through matching funds. Reports IFEA President Mary Farner reported on the following items: • Commended Career Exploration and Scholastic Team teachers for the excellence of their programs. • Children's' Fund: This effort continues to be very successful in providing benefits to needy children statewide. • Various educational legislative issues were reviewed. • March 2 is Read Across Idaho Day. Page Two -Board Meeting Minutes February 27, 2001 IFHS Student Representative Matt Stevens reported that three Idaho Falls High School teachers had been nominated for the Sylvan Teacher of the Year award. The Wrestling team placed third at state and the Scholastic Team qualified for the State competition. Skyline Student Representative Mark Cheney reported that the Scholastic team placed first at District and will attend the State competition. In addition, Debate qualified three teams for State competition and the Wrestling team placed 4t'' at State. Trustee Ernest Jensen reported on the "Day on the Hill" meeting with area legislators and noted that it was the most productive meeting related to educational legislation that he had experienced. Consent Agenda Supulemental Levy: Assistant Superintendent Ken Schow reviewed the need to renew the Supplemental Levy and noted that it is vital to the continued success of the district. Test scores are up and district taxes are down almost 17°l0 over the past 6 years. Budget Committee Chairman Ernest Jensen reported that the Committee had reviewed the levy in depth and moved that a Supplemental Levy election be conducted on March 20, 2001. The purpose of this election will be to renew the existing levy at the current amount of $5,850,000 per year for a period of two fiscal years. Polling places will include all elementary schools and both Idaho Falls and Skyline High Schools. Polls will open at Noon and close at $:00 P.M. Trustee Sharon Parry seconded the motion. Motion passed. Matching Faud Requests: Edgemont Elementary School: PTO President Fam Farr requested matching funds in an amount not to exceed $1,170.OS for the purchase of software for the Accelerated Reading and Math programs. Idaho Falls High School: Principal Randy Hurley requested matching funds in an amount not to exceed $1,000 for the purchase of a Power Runner for the Physical Education department, Skyline High School: Principal George Boland requested matching funds in an amount not to exceed $193.21 for the purchase of a Buzzer System far the Skyline Scholastic team and an amount not to exceed $2,000 for the purchase of two Power Runners for the Skyline Weight Room. It was moved by Sharon Parry and seconded by Robert Collette to approve all requests with a correction. to the request from Skyline High School. Motion passed. Total amount of Matching Funds approved to date: $19,715.38 Adjournment: It was moved by Robert Collette and seconded by Sharon Parry to adjourn the meeting. Time: 8:45 P.M. Motion passed.
