NewTechputtogetherthisgroupofrepresentativefromdistrictsrangingfrom3,000to90,000studentstohavea discussionaboutwhatadistrictredesignmodelwouldlooklike.ThegroupplanstomeetagaininOctoberbefore potentiallysubmittingaproposaltotheBill&MelindaGatesFoundationinDecember. TheSuperintendentalsorevieweditemsdiscussedattheAnnualState{Ò¦;©z·;7;·xMeetingheldlastweekin Boiseincluding1:1mobilecomputingdevices,studentgrowthdatawithregardstoSTARratings,individualstudent growthdatarolloutandPayforPerformanceplans.Supt.Bolandandthedistrictadministrativestaffalsoattended theFirstJointMeetingoftheIdahoAssociationofSchoolAdministratorsConferenceinBoiselastweek experiencingMichaelCÒ;xkeynotepresentationandtwootherbreakoutsessions.HestatedastheDistrictlooks atadoptingourvisionandgoalsthiseveningthedriversthatMichaelFullenemphasizesthatwillbeeffective becausetheyfundamentallychangetheculturewithinthesystemarebuildingcapacityofstaffandstudents,group workorcollaborationwhichtranslatesintoincreasedstudentachievement,focusoninstructionandbestpractices andsystemwidesolutionswhichalltieintothedirectionourvisionandgoalswilltakeus. FirstIwouldliketoaddressthetwomistakesImadeontheinvoiceIsubmittedlastweek.Iwouldliketo takeoffthetwoDelegateAssemblydays(419/420)andIhaveaquestionastotheassociationpaying forthesubstitutewhenIwasawaytoTexastovisittheNewTechSchool. Iamcuriouswhereyourthoughtsareforthe1to1computingdevices.Lastwetalked,therewere1356 devicesbudgeted.Weallknowthisisnotenoughforevenonehighschool.Ihaveheardmanyrumors fromthedistrictpayingforonetooneoutofthefundbalancetoaskingstudentstobringtheirown device.Iwonderwhatthedistrictcourseofactionwillbeforthebeginningoftheschoolyear. Isenteachofyoupicturesofwhatclassroomscurrentlylooklike.Iwouldliketoaskthatwiththisvisual Iwouldliketoagainaskthatfewerinservicehoursberequiredofteachersastheyneedtogettheir roomssetup.Iwouldliketopurpose3½workdaysand½dayofbuildingmeetings.Lastschoolyearwas thenext9months.Theschoolyearwillbefullof justthebeginningofthechangethatwillhappenover trials,tribulations,andperhapssomehiccups.Iimploreyoutogivetheteachersthebestpossiblestart tothis,new,excitingschoolyearbygivingthemthemuchneededtimetoprepareafterallthemoves andallthechanges. Thisissucchanicekickooffforallthenewteacherrscomingintooourdistrictandweappreeciateallthe supportthhedistrictgivvesinhelpingsupportthisfirsteventtoocreateacultturethatemppowersforouur newteachhers.Wehaveaspecialideeathatwewillbesharingduringthebreakfastthatwearevery excitedabbout.Mitziwillbesharingthattonight. th WewillbeehavingourffirstmonthlyIFEArepmeeetingAugust27.WemeeetthethirdMMondayofeacch monthwithrepresentaativesfromeachbuildingttokeepourmmembersupddated.OurExeecutiveBoardd aremonthlyMMondayofeachmonth.WWehavesomegreatpeopleewhohelpkeeep meetingsonthefirst ourmembbersoutinouurbuildingthatkeepinformedandhelppoutwhennneeded.Wewwillalsobehoolding reptraininngthroughouurregion6diirector.Oneoofthebiggesttinitiativeswwillbethecammpaigncominngup thisfallonntheballot. Thispastffourweeks,oourassociatioonhasbeenpparticipatinginphonebankstomakecaallspromotinggthe {{ äNOttoPropositionns campaign.Thesecallshavebeeenverywideelyreceivedaandthepollswwe havedoneeshowincreddiblesupporttforthiscamppaign.Weplaantocontinuethephonebanktheresttof thesummmerandintottheschoolyeaarasneeded..OurIEApressident,PennyyCyr,willbecconferenceca alling thisThurssdayaboutthhecampaignaaswell. Beingunittedasalocal,asastate,asanationdooeshaveimpaacts.DidyouknowthattheNEAsitswith ournationnxtopofficiaalstodiscusseducationisssuesandpropposedlegislattion?Thishassnothappeneed withpreviousadministtrationsandoourNEAhasbbeenveryexccitedtohavebeengiventhisopportun ity. Legislationlooksdifferrentthanitwwouldhavehadwenotbeeenallowedthhroughtheirddoors.Iknowthis fromattendingtheNEAassemblyinnDC.Hearinggwhattheyddotorepresennteducatorsandeducatioonhas ppedmeunderstandthatmmymembershhip,thatourlocalmemberrship,andourstate reallyhel membershipisVERYimmportantfacttorwithhowourschoolsaareimpacted..Iknowmysupportiscritical andweneeedtostandttogether,nottonlyasindivviduals,butassassociationsstofurtherthheresources neededtoosecurewhattwebelieveeeducationshooulddo:emppower,engagee,andenablee.WeCANNOT lookatouurassociationnsasmoneyccostingexpenses.Wemusttlookatthemmasthewaytohaveourvvoices heard.Wee- x·doitaaloneandnoonecangetaanywherefighhtingindividuually.Forchanngetohappeen,we havetobeelongtoagrooupthatworkkstogether.Ihopeyouwiill remembeerthatasyoulookatmyviisualforthennight: Ourvoicesareneedednowmorethhanever,youu7x·havettohear muchoftthenewstounderstandthhat!
