Present from the Board of Trustees Ernest Jensen, Chairman Jared Fuhriman Jerry Wixom Sharon Parry Jerry Shively Present from the Administration: John Murdoch, Superintendent George Boland, Supervisor of Instruction Craig Ashton, Supervisor of Instruction Lanae Jensen, Recording Secretary OPENING CEREMONIES The Pledge of Allegiance was led by trustee Sharon Parry. Rodger Barlow introduced Linda Wolf, librarian at Bunker Elementary School. Mrs. Wolf has found many ways to improve and upgrade the library and reads every day to the students at Bunker. Jared Fuhriman commended Mrs. Wolf for her efforts and awarded her the Emissary of Excellence Award. Mrs. Karla LaGrange, Principal of Linden Park Elementary, introduced Julie Kaufman, volunteer at Linden Park. Mrs. LaGrange noted that Mrs. Kaufman is very dedicated, and is at Linden Park every day working with students. Ernest Jensen commended Mrs. Kaufman for her volunteer efforts and awarded her the Emissary of Excellence Award. ADOPTION OF THE AGENDA Jerry Wixom moved and Jared Fuhriman seconded the motion to adopt the agenda with the addition of item II b, Idaho Falls High School travel. Motion passed. STUDENT TRAVEL Sharon Parry moved and Jared Fuhriman seconded the motion to approve Skyline High School cheerleaders' travel to Anaheim, California for the national competition March 18 — 23rd, and Idaho Falls High School Tigerettes' travel to Anaheim, California for the national competition on March 26 and 27. Motion passed. CONSENT AGENDA Jared Fuhriman moved and Jerry Wixom seconded the motion to approve board meeting minutes of February 5, 2004. Motion passed. Board Meeting Minutes — February 24, 2004 Page Two REPORTS Student Reports Tran Turner, Skyline High School student representative, reported on many of the school activities. Trans reported support for the proposed adjustment to the bell schedule. Jalayne Hatch, Idaho Falls High School student representative, reported on many of the activities at Idaho Falls High School. She also reported support for the proposed bell schedule. Patron Input Basil Barna spoke to the Board regarding the process by which schools are closed. IFEA Gene Lund, President of the IFEA, noted the passing of Janice Dixon, a teacher at Westside Elementary School, and Richie Hill, son of Senator Brent Hill. SUPERINTENDENT'S REPORT Dr. Murdoch also noted the passing of Miss Dixon and Richie Hill. He reported that a study is being conducted to review options for Westview, and more information will be brought to the Board. Strategy I Craig Ashton noted that the bulletin boards in the Board Room have been completed with strategic planning information displayed. He discussed the makeup of the planning teams and their work with items submitted from building level plans. Mr. Ashton reported on achievements at Gale Jr. High showing continued growth in test scores of students in 7tn 8tn and 91h grades. He showed graphs indicating a drop in disciplinary referrals. The number of students tardy is down and attendance is up. In summary, the district is narrowing the achievement gap in the high SES schools. New plans in Strategy I have been developed to continue this trend. Cell Phone Policy Section 406.16 Cell Phone Usage First reading. ACTION ITEM 2004-05 Bell Schedule — Jerry Wixom moved and Jerry Shively seconded the motion to approve the 2004-05 bell schedule. Motion passed. EXECUTIVE SESSION Jerry Wixom moved and Jared Fuhriman seconded the motion to move to executive session. Motion passed. Jerry Shively moved and Jared Fuhriman seconded the motion to move to open session. Motion passed. Jerry Wixom moved and Jerry Shively seconded the motion to adjourn. Motion passed.
