Present from the Board of Trustees Jared Fuhriman Sharon Parry Jerry Shively Jerry Wixom Excused: Ernest Jensen, Chairman Conducting: Jared Fuhriman, Vice Chair Present from the Administration: John Murdoch, Superintendent George Boland, Supervisor of Instruction Craig Ashton, Supervisor of Instruction Guy Wangsgard, Business Lanae Jensen, Recording Secretary OPENING CEREMONIES The Pledge of Allegiance was led by Jerry Shively. Kelly Coughenour, Principal of Longfellow Elementary School introduced Margaret Taylor, volunteer at Longfellow. Mrs. Taylor has been volunteering at the library for the past eight years, giving of her time every day. Mr. Coughenour and Pam Gale, Longfellow Librarian, complimented Mrs. Taylor for the endless hours and support to the students. Sharon Parry commended Mrs. Taylor and presented her with the Volunteer of the Month award. ADOPTION OF THE AGENDA Sharon Parry moved and Jerry Shively seconded the motion to adopt the agenda as written. Motion passed. STUDENT TRAVEL Jerry Shively moved and Sharon Parry seconded the motion to approve the travel request for the following: Skyline and Idaho Falls High School Debate programs — Walla Walla Washington — Nov 4-6 and Sandy, Utah — Dec. 10-11 Skyline Royal Blue Ensemble — Palo Alto California — April 6 — 9th, 2004. Motion passed. MATCHING FUNDS Jerry Wixom moved and Sharon Parry seconded the motion to approve matching funds for a new ice machine for the athletic department in the amount of $1,500.00. Motion passed. CONSENT AGENDA Sharon Parry moved and Jerry Wixom seconded the motion to approve the consent agenda consisting of Board Meeting Minutes of October 12, 2004. Motion passed. School Board Minutes — October 26, 2004 Page Two REPORTS Melanie Falls, student representative from Skyline reported on the following school activities: Key Club (drive by raking) Boo -At -The Zoo, Red Ribbon Week, Cancer Drive, Boys Soccer, and the Harvest Dance. Melanie reported that the students favor the early start calendar. Andy Benson, student representative from Idaho Falls High School reported on the following school activities: Club Week, Cross Country and Volleyball will be going to state, along with boys and girls soccer, Red Ribbon Week. He reported that the students favor getting out earlier in the summer Patron Input John Carpenter discussed the waiver transfer policy. Cody Carpenter discussed the waiver transfer policy. Sue Coats discussed the waiver transfer policy. Angela Klingler discussed the calendar design and committee makeup Education Foundation — Rebecca Casper discussed Education Foundation activities IFEA — Gene Lund, President of the IFEA, discussed the critical need for efficiency across the district in order to assure student growth. Board Policy 1003.4.3.C. was reviewed by Superintendent Murdoch and George Boland. The Board set a work session to review the policy on Thursday, November 4 at 12:00 noon. FY04 Financial Audit — Judy Brower, from Galusha, Higgins, and Galusha reported that the audit was now completed and she distributed the final reports. Results show that the careful planning of the district administration and Board of Trustees and the lasting effect of this planning has placed the district in sound financial position. Superintendent's Report Dr. Murdoch announced that District 491 has been the recipient of a physical education PEP grant of $311,000.00. Dr. Murdoch introduced Susan Schultz, teacher at Taylorview. Dr. Schultz, along with Chris Boettcher, Jeff Crouch, Wendy Johnson, Tammy Sorensen, and Jane Henry worked for two years in the application for this grant. The grant will be used to help students in District 491 increase their fitness level through increased activity, and in the training of the physical education professionals in our district. The grant will be used for three years. Supt. Murdoch also announced that the IHSAA had recently made public the 2004 Fall Academic State Champions. This award is presented to the varsity team in each classification that achieves the highest cumulative grade point average. School District 491, in the 5A classification, received all of the winners of that classification, with IFHS taking volleyball, boys cross country, and boys soccer; and Skyline taking football, girls cross country and girls soccer. Calendar — Information was included regarding average high temperatures of June and August. The calendar to be brought for a second reading in November. Sharon Parry moved and Jared Fuhriman seconded the motion to approve the request to the State Department and State Board of Education to waive State Board of Education Rule IDAPA 08.02.01.250.03a. Motion passed. EXECUTIVE SESSION Jerry Wixom moved and Jerry Shively seconded the motion to move to Executive Session for discussion of Personnel, Section S67-2345(B) IDAHO CODE. Motion passed. OPEN SESSION Jerry Shively moved and Sharon Parry seconded the motion to move to open session. Motion passed. ADJOURNMENT Jared Fuhriman moved and Jerry Wixom seconded the motion to adjourn. Motion passed.
