HomeMy WebLinkAboutRead Aloud Book Gr. 1-Lesson 1All over the world, people live in neighborhoods. Neighborhoods can be found in cities and towns. But what exactly is a neighborhood? A neighborhood is a community made up of people who live near one another, called neighbors. We can have next-door neighbors and neighbors who live down the street. In a neighborhood, the neighbors help each other. The people living in the same neighborhood depend on each other to keep the streets clean and safe. And no matter where you live, or who you are, you can help to make your neighborhood a better place. One thing you can do is volunteer. This means to spend time helping someone else without asking for anything in return. You can help older neighbors by raking leaves for them. Or you can volunteer to bake cookies for someone in the neighborhood who is feeling sick or sad. You can help pick up trash in the streets and in parks so that kids will have a cleaner place to play. Anything you can do to volunteer is a good thing! Have you heard of Habitat for Humanity? This is a group that uses teamwork to help neighbors in need. The group is made up of volunteers. They help build houses for families who need a home but do not have the money to buy one. Professional builders do some of the work. Volunteers like you and me act as their assistants. We help them do jobs like sanding wood and measuring things. Assistants might even get to help with neat jobs like leaning walls against each other to form the rooms. The families who will live in the houses are so thankful to their new neighbors for helping them. Teamwork and volunteering make our neighborhoods better places to live. Think about how you can become a volunteer or help one of your neighbors! COMPREHENSION What words help you understand more about the ways that people work together? What kinds of things can you do in your neighborhood to make it a better place to live? 2 3 How do you feel when you have spent a whole day inside the house watching television? Pretty lazy, right? Well, go out and get some exercise! Exercise is the best thing for your body. You can exercise alone, but it is even more fun when you exercise with a friend. Exercise is anything you do that makes your body work harder than it does when you are sitting or resting. Running to play tag with your friends is exercise. Jumping to play hopscotch is exercise. Even walking is a simple kind of exercise. Exercise is good for your health. It keeps your heart and lungs strong and healthy. Exercise also burns the fat in your body. This helps the blood in your body move more easily from your heart to other places that need it. Exercise is good for your body. Stretch and bend, and your body will become more fl exible. Run, swim, or pedal a bike, and your body will be stronger and have more energy. Exercise helps the parts of your body work together. Choose an exercise that is fun and do it often. Consider asking a friend to join you. Then exercise will just feel like playing! Before exercising, it is important to warm up your muscles by doing gentle stretches. Muscles help you move. Warming up your muscles helps you bend and move more easily. If you warm up your muscles before exercising, you will feel less stiff and sore after exercising. If your muscles don’t hurt, you’ll want to exercise again sooner! Safety is also important when you exercise. Here are a few things to remember: put on a helmet when you ride a bike. Drink lots of water whenever you exercise. Rest after exercising. Don’t exercise when you are sick. After you exercise, be proud of your hard work. Show somebody how high you can spring toward the basketball hoop. Race a friend to show how fast you can run. When you feel good about exercise, it shows!
