Dawna’s mother came to the door. “Dawna, honey, what are you and Snap doing?” “I’m keeping Snap safe,” said Dawna. “I have to guard her so she doesn’t get hurt.” “How would Snap get hurt?” asked Dawna’s mom. “Mom, don’t you know about the coyotes? There are coyotes that live in the park, and sometimes they catch cats. I’m not going to let that happen to Snap. I’m going to protect her from those mean coyotes.” “Well, yes, it’s true,” said Dawna’s mom. “There has been some trouble with coyotes. Let me know if you see one, and we’ll call the police.” A few minutes later, Dawna saw something moving in the park. As she watched, a furry gray animal came out from behind the bushes. It looked like a tall, skinny dog with yellow eyes. She called out, “Mom, there’s a coyote. Can you call the police, please?” So Dawna’s mom called the police. A few minutes later, two tall police offi cers drove up to the apartment. They caught the coyote and put it in a cage. Then one of the offi cers came across the street. “Are you the brave hero who kept guard so we could catch this coyote?” he asked Dawna. “I didn’t want that mean coyote to get Snap,” Dawna said. “Well, you did a great job,” said the offi cer. “We’ll take that coyote to the country, where he won’t cause trouble. And here’s a special present for you.” He held up a shiny gold helmet and put it on Dawna’s head. “You can wear this helmet while you’re guarding our city,” he said. “Thank you,” said Dawna. “Snap and I can take turns wearing it!” COMPREHENSION What words in the story help you understand how Dawna feels about Snap? How do Dawna, her mother, and the police offi cer share the job of keeping Snap safe? 22 23 Flying a kite can be lots of fun. But what makes a kite fl y? Wind makes a kite fl y. Wind pushes hard against the bottom of the kite. It pushes less hard against the top of the kite. The force of the wind against the bottom of the kite is stronger. This pushes the kite up into the air. If a kite is leaning the wrong way, the wind won’t keep it up in the air. A kite’s bridle helps it lean the right way. The bridle is a string. It is attached to the top and bottom of the kite. The bridle makes a “V” underneath the kite. A kite also has to have a fl ying line, or a kite string. One end of this line is attached to the bridle. You hold the other end. The line pulls on the bridle. This keeps the kite leaning the right way so the wind can keep it up in the air. You use the line to control the kite. You can make the line shorter. A shorter line will keep the kite closer. You can make the line longer. This will let the kite fl y farther away. If there is a lot of wind, the kite can fl y high and far. It might look very small in the distance. Sometimes a kite won’t stay steady. It might turn and fl ap in the wind. The kite has a tail to keep it from twisting. The tail is often a long string of cloth. The tail helps keep the head of the kite pointing up. This helps the kite fl y well. Now you know how a kite fl ies. So get a kite, and fi nd a good position to start fl ying. An open fi eld or a park is a good place. Then send your kite into the sky!
