Use page 63 to administer the test. Explain Write each oral vocabulary word below on the board. Read it aloud. Offer an explanation and a brief example for each word. Words About Community community n. a place where people live Many people in our community know one another’s names. generation n. the people born about the same time Grandparents, parents, and children are each in a different generation. junior adj. younger than I am junior to my older brother. mayor n. the head of a town The mayor gave a speech about helping our town. village n. a small group of houses in the country We visited a village in the middle of a forest. Discuss Guide children to see the relationship between each word and the category. Ask: Who lives inside your house? Who lives near your house? Prompt children to use each word. Read Aloud Explain that you will read aloud a story about how a community can change after a long time. Then read aloud “Our Town’s Birthday Party.” Discuss the Comprehension questions. Categorize and Classify Reread and Explain Reread “Our Town’s Birthday Party.” At the end of each sentence that includes an oral vocabulary word, stop and repeat the explanation of the word. Then reread the sentence. Use a Graphic Organizer Use the graphic organizer and the questions below to reinforce understanding of the relationship between each word and the category. Words About Boats bow n. the front part of a boat An American fl ag was on the bow of the boat. fl oat v. to move on top of water I fi ll the bathtub with water so my toy boat can fl oat. steamship n. a boat that has an engine that works by steam, not gasoline or electricity Long ago, people traveled by steamship on rivers. steer v. to turn or make move a certain way The man will steer the ship into the dock. whistle n. something that makes a high, clear sound when air is blown through it I covered my ears when the boat’s whistle blew. Discuss Guide children to see the relationship between each word and the category. Prompt children to tell about a real boat or a toy boat they have seen. Have them use the words to describe it. Read Aloud Explain that you will read aloud a story about how a girl’s great-grandfather made a friend while sailing across the ocean to the United States. Then read aloud “Friendship on the Sea.” Discuss the Comprehension questions. Categorize Work with a partner. Make a list of different things that fl oat on water. Then list things that sink. Draw Draw a picture of three generations of your family doing something together.
