Use page 70 to administer the test. Explain Write each oral vocabulary word below on the board. Read it aloud. Offer an explanation and a brief example for each word. Words About Teaching and Learning composition n. a piece of writing Eva wrote a composition about her favorite season. explained v. told about something The problem was hard, but Mrs. Thomas explained clearly how to do it. practice v. to learn something by doing it To be good at playing the piano, you have to practice every day for years. schooling n. what you learn from going to school Jamal’s schooling made him ready to be a doctor. training n. teaching or coaching It took many years of training for Laurel to become an excellent dancer. Discuss Guide children to see the relationship between each word and the category. Ask questions such as this: What is something you practice? Read Aloud Explain that you will read aloud a story about a girl who studied hard and became a famous writer. Then read aloud “Maya Angelou.” Discuss the Comprehension questions. Categorize and Classify Reread and Explain Reread “Maya Angelou.” At the end of each sentence that includes an oral vocabulary word, stop and repeat the explanation of the word. Then reread the sentence. Use a Graphic Organizer Use the graphic organizer and the questions below to reinforce understanding of the relationship between each word and the category. He never said or did foolish things. wisdom n. good sense A good leader should have wisdom and know what is the best thing to do. wisest adj. knowing best what is right Eddie’s grandfather always knew what to do. (open-minded) Deepen Understanding Review Repeat explanations for all oral vocabulary words. Use the defi nitions and examples from Day 1 and Day 3. Guide Partner Activities Have partners work together to complete each of the activities below. Circulate and listen to partners as they work. Provide corrective feedback. Categorize Make a list with your partner. Tell which of these things you would need to practice a lot and get a lot of training in to do well: sitting, playing piano, breathing, sneezing, gymnastics, ice-skating. Examples With a partner, talk about times you have been open-minded. Then talk about times you have been sensible or used good reasoning. Describe Tell your partner about people you know who act with wisdom. Decide which person is the wisest. Role-Play In a group of three, act out a skit that explains why it is important to study and get good schooling. Discuss Talk to your partner. Think of something you like that you could write a composition about. List facts and details you might include in your writing. Assess To assess what word meanings children have learned, copy and distribute the Pretest/ Posttest on pages 108–109. Use page 70 to administer the test. Compare scores with Day 1 assessment.
