Use page 78 to administer the test. Explain Write each oral vocabulary word below on the board. Read it aloud. Offer an explanation and a brief example for each word. Words About the City block n. the area between two streets where buildings are found The library is fi ve blocks from my house. downtown n. the busy center of a city The city’s downtown was fi lled with shops, people, and cars. monument n. a statue or other thing made to remember someone or something The Lincoln Memorial is a monument. neighborhood n. a certain part of a city or town All the children in Tom’s neighborhood came to the party. public adj. where many other people are It is rude to shout when you are in a public place. transportation n. ways of traveling Planes, trains, and boats are different kinds of transportation. Discuss Guide children to see the relationship between each word and the category of the city. Read Aloud Explain that you will read aloud a story about a mouse from the country that visits her cousin in the city. Then read aloud “A Trip to the City.” Discuss the Comprehension questions. Categorize and Classify Reread and Explain Reread “A Trip to the City.” At the end of each sentence that includes an oral vocabulary word, stop and repeat the explanation of the word. Then reread the sentence. Use a Graphic Organizer Use the graphic organizer and the questions below to reinforce understanding of the relationship between each word and the category. Words About Parts of a City Words About Things in a City transportation monument neighborhood downtown block 1. Some cities have famous monuments. What other things might people visit a city to see? Add these to the graphic organizer as children suggest them. (Sample answers: shops; museums; parks) 2. Name two public places in a city. Then name two places that are private. Read it aloud. Offer an explanation and a brief example for each word. Words About Actions leading v. going with to show the way Sally is leading the new student to the gym. lifting n. picking up My arms get tired when I do a lot of lifting. pointed v. showed where something was by holding out a fi nger toward it Tom pointed at the bird’s nest at the top of the tree. riding v. being carried on My brother is riding the train from Boston to New York. sliding v. passing over smoothly Brenda was sliding down the hill on her sled. strolled v. walked slowly I strolled through the park. Discuss Guide children to see the relationship between each word and the category. Ask volunteers to come to the front of the room and have each one act out one of the words. Use the defi nitions and examples from Day 1 and Day 3. Guide Partner Activities Have partners work together to complete each of the activities below. Circulate and listen to partners as they work. Provide corrective feedback. Categorize Work with a partner. List two things someone might point at. Then list two things that might need lifting. Describe Talk to your partner. Describe the neighborhood where you live. Draw Draw a picture of a person riding a form of transportation. The person could be traveling by land, sea, or air. Discuss Work with your partner. Tell a story about someone who travels to another city to visit a friend. Use these words: downtown, block, monument, sliding, leading, public. Role-Play Show how you would stroll through a zoo looking at the animals. Assess To assess what word meanings children have learned, copy and distribute the Pretest/ Posttest on pages 124–125. Use page 78 to administer the test. Compare scores with Day 1 assessment.
