Use page 81 to administer the test. Explain Write each oral vocabulary word below on the board. Read it aloud. Offer an explanation and a brief example for each word. Words About Moods cross adj. angry and annoyed Talking back to your teacher will make her cross! excitement n. a very strong feeling of happiness My family is full of excitement because we are going to the beach. festive adj. like a party or other special or exciting time For my sister’s party, we put up streamers to make the house look more festive. proud adj. happy about something good you or someone else has done Will felt very proud after he learned how to swim. tense adj. nervous Madison felt tense whenever she had to speak in class. worried adj. unhappy because you are thinking about a problem Beth was worried because she could not fi nd her watch. Discuss Guide children to see the relationship between each word and the category. Read Aloud Explain that you will read aloud a story about a boy who bakes muffi ns for his grandmother. Then read aloud “Muffi ns for Grandma.” Discuss the Comprehension questions. Categorize and Classify Reread and Explain Reread “Muffi ns for Grandma.” At the end of each sentence that includes an oral vocabulary word, stop and repeat the explanation of the word. Then reread the sentence. Use a Graphic Organizer Use the graphic organizer and the questions below to reinforce understanding of the relationship between each word and the category. Words About Moods Happy Unhappy proud excitement festive worried tense cross 1. What word might you use to describe someone who is happy about winning a contest? (Sample answers: proud; excitement) 2. A cross person might __________. (Sample answers: frown; shout) 3. What other words can you think of about happy or unhappy moods? Add these to the graphic organizer as children suggest them. Words About Opinions agreement n. having the same opinion My mom and I are in agreement about making steak for dinner tonight. argument n. a talking fi ght The two brothers had an argument over which television program to watch. belief n. a strong opinion I have the belief that you should treat everyone nicely. convinced adj. sure I am convinced that my answer to the question is right. recommended v. suggested The art teacher recommended that her students wear old clothes whenever they paint. respect v. to act like someone or something is important If you respect your classmates’ feelings and opinions, our class will be a safe and happy place for everybody. The friends must decide what to play. Use these words: recommended, agreement. Examples Talk to your partner. Describe a time when you felt proud. Explain what made you feel that way. Now describe a time when you felt worried. Explain why you felt that way. Role-Play Pretend you are making your house look festive for a party. You should be smiling with excitement.
