Use page 83 to administer the test. Explain Write each oral vocabulary word below on the board. Read it aloud. Offer an explanation and a brief example for each word. Words About Mountains boulder n. a large rock There are small rocks and big boulders on the side of the mountain. mountain n. a large hill It will take all day to climb up this mountain. peak n. the top of a mountain There is snow at the peak of the mountain but not at the bottom. ragged adj. uneven Be careful of the ragged edge of the walking trail. rugged adj. rough and rocky The rugged ground can be hard to walk on. steep adj. almost straight up It is too hard to walk up this steep hill. Discuss Guide children to see the relationship between each word and the category. Prompt them to use the words to tell what a mountain looks like. Read Aloud Explain that you will read aloud a story about goats that live on the mountains. Then read aloud “Baby Mountain Goats.” Discuss the Comprehension questions. Categorize and Classify Reread and Explain Reread “Baby Mountain Goats.” At the end of each sentence that includes an oral vocabulary word, stop and repeat the explanation of the word. Then reread the sentence. Use a Graphic Organizer Use the graphic organizer and the questions below to reinforce understanding of the relationship between each word and the category. Words That Name Things Words That Describe Things boulder mountain peak ragged rugged steep 1. If you were standing on the peak of a mountain, would you be up high or down low? (up high) 2. Why might you get tired walking up a steep mountain? Would it be easier to walk if the ground were ragged and rugged? (Sample answer: It’s hard to walk straight up; it would be harder because the ground would be rough, rocky, and uneven.) 3. Which would be harder to carry, a small stone or a boulder? Offer an explanation and a brief example for each word. Words About the Coast coast n. land next to the sea When I go to the coast, I can hear the sound of waves. foggy adj. full of wet, gray clouds The air was so foggy I could not see the boats in the water. fresh water n. water that is not salty People only drink fresh water. mist n. lots of tiny drops of water in the air My face gets wet from the mist at the beach. salt water n. water that is salty Whales live in salt water. tide n. rise and fall of the sea When the tide was low, we found crabs on the beach. Discuss Guide children to see the relationship between each word and the category. Ask questions such as these: What words are about water? What words are about land? Read Aloud Explain that you will read aloud a story about fi sh that are born and grow near the coast. Then read aloud “A Nursery for Salmon.” Discuss the Comprehension questions. An ocean is bigger than a river.) Deepen Understanding Review Repeat explanations for all oral vocabulary words. Use the defi nitions and examples from Day 1 and Day 3. Guide Partner Activities Have partners work together to complete each of the activities below. Circulate and listen to partners as they work. Provide corrective feedback. Role-Play Show how you might look when you are climbing up a very steep hill. Show how you might look when you are swimming in a lake of fresh water. Discuss Create a story about a family that hikes to the top of a mountain. Use these words: mountain, foggy, boulder, mist, peak. Tell the story to your partner. Examples Have you ever walked on ground that was rugged and ragged? Where were you? Draw Draw a picture of people swimming in salt water. Where would they be if they were swimming in salt water? Compare Talk to your partner. Compare the coast at low tide with the coast at high tide. Talk about what you might do and see at the beach. Assess To assess what word meanings children have learned, copy and distribute the Pretest/ Posttest on pages 134–135. Use page 83 to administer the test. Compare scores with Day 1 assessment.
