HomeMy WebLinkAboutRead Aloud Book Gr. 2-Lesson 16One day during summer vacation, Jamal looked out the window and saw his
neighbor Marissa standing behind a table in her front yard. On the table was a big
pitcher of lemonade and a sign that said, ”Lemonade, 10 cents.”
Jamal watched as one customer after another bought Marissa’s lemonade. He
started to count all the people who bought lemonade. Then, he fi gured out how much
money Marissa was making. “I could have a lemonade stand, too,” Jamal thought. “I
could promote my lemonade as the cheapest in the neighborhood. And I could put up
more signs than Marissa did to market my lemonade to more people!”
The next morning, Jamal went to a fruit merchant down the street and bought
enough lemons to fi ll up the basket on his bicycle. Then Jamal hired his friend Miguel,
who was a great artist, to make some cool-looking signs. These signs would help
advertise his lemonade stand.
Back home in the kitchen, Jamal cut the lemons in half and squeezed the juice into a
pitcher. Then he added water, and mixed the water and juice with a spoon. He added
ice cubes to keep it cold. “That should do it,” Jamal said to himself, but he didn’t taste
what he had made.
Jamal picked up the pitcher of lemonade and hurried outside. He hoped to get some
customers before Marissa got started. He quickly set up his table. His friend Miguel
brought the signs, and Jamal paid him a dollar.
Jamal’s fi rst customer was his next-door neighbor. Jamal watched as she took a long
gulp of lemonade. She made a funny face and started to cough. “Maybe she doesn’t
like lemonade,” thought Jamal. But still he didn’t taste what he had made.
A short time later, Marissa came out and set up her lemonade stand. She said to
Jamal, “I see you’re in the lemonade business, too.”
Jamal watched as two neighbors bought lemonade from Marissa. All day long, more and
more customers went to her stand. No one bought lemonade from Jamal. When evening
came, Jamal sat behind his table looking disappointed. What was Marissa’s secret?
”Hey Jamal,” Marissa said quietly. ”Did you taste your lemonade?”
Jamal thought for a moment. Then he poured himself a cup for the fi rst time that
day. ”Yuck!” he shouted. He had been selling a bad product.
”You probably forgot to add sugar,” said Marissa. She felt bad for Jamal, but she
smiled a little. She suggested that they could sell lemonade together the next day.

When winter weather strikes, what does it feel like? How about cold and
chilly? Does that sound right? You feel those icy wintry winds blowing on your
skin. You might even worry that your ears will freeze into ice cubes!
Not everyone lives in a place that has cold winter weather. But even if you
don’t, you might visit a place that does. If you are somewhere cold in the
winter, there is one basic rule you must follow: bundle up! Keeping your body
warm is the only way to stay safe in cold weather.
When someone loses more heat than the body can create, they can get
hypothermia. This is when the body temperature becomes much colder than it
should be. When this happens, the body parts that are farthest away from the
heart—like fi ngers and toes—have the most risk of becoming freezing cold.
When you’re dressing warmly for winter, the fi rst thing you’ll need to put on is
a hat. Most of our body heat escapes from our heads. If you wear a nice warm
hat that covers your ears, you will be able to keep your body much warmer!
Some other important items to wear are thick gloves and warm socks. It
is important to keep your gloves and socks as dry as possible. Have you ever
walked outside after a blizzard and gotten snow in your boots? Or have you
ever made snowballs until your gloves got wet and heavy? Then you know that
wet socks and gloves are no fun. They can make you feel very cold. It could
even cause you to get sick with a cold.
The most important clothes to wear in wintry weather are warm pants and
a jacket. You can decide how warmly you’ll need to dress by looking out your
window. If it’s early in the morning and there is already a frosty haze in the sky,
it would be smart to wear thermal pants and a heavy jacket. Or if you look
outside and the sun is beginning to melt the snow, you could probably wear
warm, but lighter, clothes. It is smart to dress in layers. This way, you can take
something off if you feel too warm. But if you don’t wear enough, then you
won’t have anything extra to put on if you feel too cold.
Just remember to stay safe and warm whenever winter fi nds you!
