Josh’s older brother Alan was hanging out with us while their mom was at the store. We played a game called obstacle course. Josh and I drew a course with chalk and took turns racing around it. I had just fi nished my turn and was looking back at Josh when he fell. “I’m OK!” he said, jumping back up. But I could see that his knee was bleeding. He had gotten a wound from the fall. Alan rushed over to look at Josh’s cut. “I think we should go get your mom,” I said. Then I remembered that his mom was not there. I looked at Alan. Alan could tell I was nervous, so he calmly said, “I know what to do. Don’t worry. We’ll take care of it together.” Then Alan showed us what to do when someone gets injured. To treat an injury, fi rst you must decide if the condition of the person you are trying to help is serious. It is always best to tell an adult when someone gets hurt. If someone is bleeding a lot, you should call 9-1-1. The operator will send an ambulance right away to take the injured person to the hospital. Or if the bleeding is not too serious, you can give treatment yourself. To treat a minor cut, you should fi rst press down on it lightly with a clean cloth. This will help stop the bleeding. Next, you should wash the wound with a gentle soap. This will help keep germs out of the wound so it can heal faster. Then you should put an antibiotic ointment on the wound. Medicine in the ointment kills any germs in the wound. Finally, you should cover the wound with a bandage. The bandage protects the skin while it heals. Soon the skin will heal and be as good as new. When Josh’s mom came home from the store, we told her what we did to fi x the wound. She lifted the bandage and took a peek. “It looks as if you boys did a great job!” she said. You should always take precautions to avoid getting hurt. Wear protective gear when you are doing something that might cause an injury. That means always wearing a helmet and pads when you bike or skate. COMPREHENSION What can a friend do to help another friend who is hurt? Which words help you understand how to stay safe? 10 11 Many years ago, a boy named Peter lived in a town called Haarlem. The town of Haarlem was in a country called Holland, which lay beside the stormy North Sea. Holland was a low, fl at country. Some parts of the country were even lower than the sea. So the people of Holland built huge walls out of the earth. These walls were called dikes. They kept the land dry so that people could build homes and grow crops. One day Peter asked his father if he could take dinner to an old woman in town who was sick. “Yes,” his father said, “as long you promise to be back before dark.” So Peter set out right away. He followed a path that ran along the base of a dike. He visited the sick old woman and gave her food and comfort. By the time Peter started home, it was already getting dark and the wind was blowing. He knew he had to hurry, so he walked quickly along the path beneath the dike. Peter could hardly see the path. He began to feel afraid. He imagined terrible monsters were chasing him. Then he heard something really scary. He heard the sound of water trickling through the dike. He followed the sound to a hole in the dike. Only a thin stream of water fl owed through the hole, but he knew that the stormy sea was high above him on the other side of that huge earth wall. The stormy sea would make the hole bigger. More water would come through and the hole would get bigger still. The hole would keep getting bigger until the dike came crashing down, fl ooding the whole town. Peter ran over and stuck his fi nger in the hole, and the water stopped. Peter cried for help, but no one was near. Soon his fi nger began to ache. He called again, but no one came. His fi nger quickly became sore and started to swell. Still, no one came. Peter suffered for hours, holding his fi nger in the dike. Finally, his father found him. Peter was so tired and hungry that he thought he might faint. Peter’s father saw the hole. He told people from the town, and they came to help fi x the dike. It took Peter three days to recover from his adventure. When he was better, the people of Haarlem threw a party in his honor. He had saved the town! COMPREHENSION How does Peter make a difference in his community? Which words help you understand the pain Peter felt that night? 12 13
