Words About Being Smart clever adj. smart The clever puppy quickly learned to follow commands. deceive v. to trick She tried to deceive her mom into believing she was too sick to go to school. devise v. to make a plan Workers always devise a plan before building a new house. intelligence n. the ability to think It takes intelligence to do well in school. scheme n. a plan; a kind of crazy idea We came up with a scheme to build a rocket ship. trickster n. someone who plays clever tricks My brother is a real trickster—he’s always trying to fool me into giving him my dessert. Discuss Guide children to see the relationship between each word and the category. Ask: What might show that someone is a trickster? Read Aloud Explain that you will read aloud a story about a spider that doesn’t want to share its dinner with a turtle. Then read aloud “Anansi and Turtle.” Discuss the Comprehension questions.
