Words About the Environment atmosphere n. a mix of gases surrounding Earth; the air and sky The spaceship fl ew down through Earth’s atmosphere. electricity n. the power that makes light bulbs and televisions turn on If the electricity goes off, the lights will go out. excess n. more than you need We should save energy instead of using excess. global adj. worldwide Clean air and clean water are global needs. planet n. a very large object in space that circles around the Sun Earth, Venus, and Jupiter are planets. pollution n. what makes air or water dirty The bay was fi lled with pollution after the oil spill. Discuss Guide children to see the relationship between each word and the category. Ask: What does pollution do to our planet? Why is it important to not use natural energy in excess? Read Aloud Explain that you will read aloud a story about ways to save energy and water. Then read aloud “How to Help the Environment.” Discuss the Comprehension questions. Categorize and Classify Reread and Explain Reread “How to Help the Environment.” At the end of each sentence that includes an oral vocabulary word, stop and repeat the explanation of the word. Then reread the sentence. Use a Graphic Organizer Use the graphic organizer and the questions below to reinforce understanding of the relationship between each word and the category. Categorize Think about these words: snapped, insist, mention, mutter, utter. What do they sound like? Now put them in order from soft to loud. Explain your order to your partner. Draw Show a scene where people are using an excess of energy and sending pollution into our atmosphere. Then show a scene where people are taking care of our planet. Describe Tell how electricity allows us to hear about global events and speak with people all over the world. Write Write about a time you received praise for something you did. Remember to use a lot of detail. Assess To assess what word meanings children have learned, copy and distribute the Pretest/ Posttest on pages 104–105. Use page 68 to administer the test.
