Use page 78 to administer the test. Explain Write each oral vocabulary word below on the board. Read it aloud. Offer an explanation and a brief example for each word. Words About Baseball baseball n. a team sport played with bats and balls Baseball is a classic summertime sport. bleachers n. bench seats next to the fi eld The excited fans cheered from the bleachers. compete v. to play against We will compete to see which baseball team is the best. manager n. the head coach of a baseball team The manager decided that the pitcher should come out of the game. umpire n. the person who makes sure that a game is played fairly The umpire called me out at home plate. warm-up n. a time to get ready We stretched out during the warm-up. Discuss Guide children to see the relationship between each word and the category. Prompt them to use the words to discuss sports they watch or play. Read Aloud Explain that you will read aloud a story about a famous baseball player named Lou Gehrig. Then read aloud “The Luckiest Man on the Face of the Earth.” Discuss the Comprehension questions. Categorize and Classify Reread and Explain Reread “The Luckiest Man on the Face of the Earth.” At the end of each sentence that includes an oral vocabulary word, stop and repeat the explanation of the word. Then reread the sentence. Use a Graphic Organizer Use the graphic organizer and the questions below to reinforce understanding of the relationship between each word and the category. Baseball Words People at the Game Playing the Game manager umpire compete warm-up 1. Would you need an umpire for a warm-up? Why or why not? (no; An umpire only needs to be there during the game.) 2. What do fans in the bleachers do? (Sample answers: cheer; yell) 3. Name some other people you might see at a baseball game. Then name other words about playing baseball. Add these to the graphic organizer as children suggest them. Words About Soldiers advanced v. moved forward The soldiers advanced into an unknown area of the town. armed forces n. armies of soldiers Abraham joined the armed forces to protect his country. battle n. a long fi ght They fought for days before winning the battle. conquer v. to take control of The army fought to conquer the new land. shield n. a metal plate used to protect the body The soldier held his shield close to his body so he wouldn’t get hurt. warrior n. a fi ghter The warrior had fought in many battles before this one. Discuss Guide children to see the relationship between each word and the category. Ask questions such as this: What do you know about armed forces such as the army or the navy? Read Aloud Explain that you will read aloud a story about a woman who was one of China’s most famous warriors. Then read aloud “The Legend of Hua Mulan.” Discuss the Comprehension questions. Provide corrective feedback. Word Parts The suffi x -er means “a person who.” The word manager means “a person who manages.” Use a dictionary or glossary. Work with a partner to fi nd and list three other examples of words with -er, meaning “a person who.” Role-Play Show your partner how you would root for your favorite players as they compete in a baseball game. Show how an umpire would call someone out in the game. Draw Draw a picture of a warrior holding a shield. Show the warrior doing a warm-up before going to fi ght in a battle. Examples List examples of places that have bleachers. Write Work with your partner. Think about what you learned about Hua Mulan’s time in the armed forces. Write about what she might have felt knowing that an enemy army was advancing on her homeland and wanted to conquer it.
