Words About Getting Hurt ambulance n. a vehicle that takes hurt or sick people to the hospital The ambulance took the sick woman to the hospital. condition n. the way someone is Dan was in good condition after getting over his cold. injured adj. hurt I took care of the injured animal. precaution n. something you do to avoid getting sick or hurt Wearing a seat belt is an important precaution. treatment n. something done to help a person who is sick or hurt The treatment the doctor gave me helped me get better. wound n. a cut, bruise, or other injury to the skin I cleaned the wound on my hand. Discuss Guide children to see the relationship between each word and the category. Ask questions such as these: When have you been injured? Did you have a wound? Read Aloud Explain that you will read aloud a story about what to do when someone gets hurt. Then read aloud “A First Aid Lesson.” Discuss the Comprehension questions. Was there a precaution that could have been taken to stop the injury from happening? Role-Play Pretend you are suffering because you have an ache or a wound. Then ask your partner to pretend to give treatment and comfort to you. Describe Talk to your partner. Describe what you would do if someone were in bad condition. Tell what would happen when the ambulance got there. Compare Compare how someone would feel if he or she were about to faint to how the person would feel if a fi nger just started to swell.
