Words About Superheroes captured v. caught Superwoman captured the dangerous criminal. distress n. when people are upset The family was in distress because of the fi re. feat n. a brave act Capturing the criminal was an amazing feat of bravery. muscular strength n. power that comes from muscles The superhero had amazing muscular strength. rescue v. to save The fi refi ghter had to rescue the puppy. villain n. a bad guy Can you name a villain that Superman has not defeated? Discuss Guide children to see the relationship between each word and the category. Prompt them to use the words to describe heroic actions. Ask: Have you ever seen or heard about someone in distress? What was done to rescue him or her? Read Aloud Explain that you will read aloud a story about an unlikely superhero. Then read aloud “Gabriel Lopez, Superhero.” Discuss the Comprehension questions. Categorize and Classify Reread and Explain Reread “Gabriel Lopez, Superhero.” At the end of each sentence that includes an oral vocabulary word, stop and repeat the explanation of the word. Words About Moving Quickly charged v. rushed The players charged onto the court as their names were called. hastened v. hurried Jenelle hastened to get to class on time. momentum n. the speed or power something has while moving Kara’s bike gained momentum as it went down the hill. pursuing v. following The police offi cer is pursuing the suspect. retreat v. to go back or move away It is a good idea to retreat from a growling dog. streak v. to move really fast I saw a runner streak across the park.
