Use page 82 to administer the test. Explain Write each oral vocabulary word below on the board. Read it aloud. Offer an explanation and a brief example for each word. Words About Sailing aboard adv. on a ship, train, plane, etc. Come aboard before we set sail. anchor n. a heavy object that keeps a ship in place The captain dropped the anchor when the ship reached land. Antarctic Circle n. an imaginary line around Earth that circles Antarctica The ship sailed in the cold water around the Antarctic Circle. bay n. a part of the sea that is partly surrounded by a curved area of land The bay was fi lled with boats. current n. a steady fl ow of water The sea turtles were carried along by the current. voyage n. a trip, often a long one by water We went on a voyage across the ocean. Discuss Guide children to see the relationship between each word and the category. Ask questions such as these: Where would you like to go on a voyage to? Have you ever swum in a bay? Read Aloud Explain that you will read aloud a story about a journey to Antarctica. Then read aloud “Shackleton’s Amazing Journey.” Discuss the Comprehension questions. Categorize and Classify Reread and Explain Reread “Shackleton’s Amazing Journey.” At the end of each sentence that includes an oral vocabulary word, stop and repeat the explanation of the word. Then reread the sentence. Role-Play Pretend you are a scout on an expedition into a forest. Show how you might go ahead to fi nd out where everyone should go next. Then show how you would guide the rest of your group on the path you found. Describe Talk with your partner. Imagine you were going on a voyage to the Antarctic Circle. Describe what you might see. Write Now write a description of your travels. Use these words: aboard, frontier, wilderness, territory. Draw Draw a picture of a bay.
