Use page 83 to administer the test. Explain Write each oral vocabulary word below on the board. Read it aloud. Offer an explanation and a brief example for each word. Words About Bad Behavior disgust n. a feeling of dislike or of thinking something is wrong I was fi lled with disgust when I saw the boy cheat on the test. embarrass v. to be made to feel shy or ashamed My baby sister will embarrass me if she cries during the movie. insult n. mean words His insult about my singing made me feel sad all day. scorn n. strong dislike and lack of respect She gave a look of scorn when I said I was too scared to go. sneered v. spoke with scorn or gave a look of scorn Her lip curled up as she sneered at the other team. treated v. acted toward She treated everyone unkindly. Discuss Guide children to see the relationship between each word and the category. Ask questions such as this: What might make you feel disgust? Read Aloud Explain that you will read aloud a story about a spoiled princess. Then read aloud “The Spoiled Princess.” Discuss the Comprehension questions. Categorize and Classify Reread and Explain Reread “The Spoiled Princess.” At the end of each sentence that includes an oral vocabulary word, stop and repeat the explanation of the word. Words About Feelings emotions n. feelings Happiness and sadness are both emotions. excite v. to be made to feel very happy Going on vacation excited us. joyful adj. very happy I felt joyful when my team won the game. mood n. the way you are feeling at a certain time We were all in a good mood during the holidays. mournful adj. very sad She felt mournful when she lost her favorite toy. pleasure n. something that is fun or makes you happy It was a pleasure to see you. Categorize Work with a partner. List three things you think are a pleasure to do. Then list three things that embarrass you. Examples What is something that puts you in a good mood? Tell your partner. Now tell about something that puts you in a bad mood. Describe Talk to your partner. Describe something that might excite you. Word Parts The suffi x -ful means “full of.” The word joyful means “full of joy.” The word mournful means “full of mourning or sadness.” Use a dictionary or glossary. Work with your partner to fi nd and list two other examples of words with -ful meaning “full of.” Draw Draw three faces that show different emotions. Write Now write a description of the faces.
