Use page 86 to administer the test. Explain Write each oral vocabulary word below on the board. Read it aloud. Offer an explanation and a brief example for each word. Words About Ways to Move creep v. to move quietly, close to the ground I like to creep up behind my sister and say, “Boo!” crouch v. to bend down close to the ground I crouched behind the couch to hide. jogging v. running at a steady, medium pace I jogged around the neighborhood every day for exercise. pounced v. jumped suddenly The cat pounced on the yarn. skipping v. moving along quickly by hopping from one foot to the other I skipped home because I was eager to see my baby sister. trudge v. to take slow, heavy steps I trudged home from school with my poor report card. Discuss Guide children to see the relationship between each word and the category. Prompt students to use the words to describe how people move while playing a sport. Read Aloud Explain that you will read aloud a story about the way a turtle moves compared to a rabbit. Then read aloud “The Turtle and the Rabbit.” Discuss the Comprehension questions. Categorize and Classify Reread and Explain Reread “The Turtle and the Rabbit.” At the end of each sentence that includes an oral vocabulary word, stop and repeat the explanation of the word. Then reread the sentence. Use a Graphic Organizer Use the graphic organizer and the questions below to reinforce understanding of the relationship between each word and the category. Discuss Guide children to see the relationship between each word and the category. Ask students: What do you do prior to getting into bed at night? What do you think people have done for centuries? Read Aloud Explain that you will read aloud a story about wild horses and how long they have been on an island. (Sample answers: a birthday; a holiday) Deepen Understanding Review Repeat explanations for all oral vocabulary words. Use the defi nitions and examples from Day 1 and Day 3. Guide Partner Activities Have partners work together to complete each of the activities below. Circulate and listen to partners as they work. Provide corrective feedback. Role-Play Show how you would creep, crouch, jog, pounce, and skip. Then pretend you are very tired. Show how you would trudge. Compare Talk to your partner. Compare two events that happen on an annual basis. Do any of them happen in an instant? Discuss Talk to your partner. Tell about something that happened centuries ago. Then tell about something that has to happen immediately. Describe Talk to your partner. Describe what you do prior to going to school in the morning. Word Parts The suffi x -ly means “at a specifi c period of time.” The word currently means “happening now.” Work with a partner. List three words about time, such as week. Add -ly to each one. Talk about what you think each word means. Then try to fi nd each new word in a dictionary. Assess To assess what word meanings children have learned, copy and distribute the Pretest/ Posttest on pages 140–141. Use page 86 to administer the test. Compare scores with Day 1 assessment.
