Use page 87 to administer the test. Explain Write each oral vocabulary word below on the board. Read it aloud. Offer an explanation and a brief example for each word. Words That Mean “Great” extraordinary adj. beyond what is normal Jane is an extraordinary piano player. incredible adj. so amazing it’s hard to believe That talking parrot is incredible! popular fi gure n. someone whom others consider to be great Our mayor is a popular fi gure. sensational adj. exciting Kim’s song was sensational. superior adj. better than average This bread is superior to all the others. tremendous adj. very impressive The soccer goalie made some tremendous catches. Discuss Guide children to see the relationship between each word and the category. Ask questions such as these: What is the opposite of a popular fi gure? What are some examples of a sensational meal? Read Aloud Explain that you will read aloud a story about unusual people and words that mean “great.” Then read aloud “Weird Records.” Discuss the Comprehension questions. Categorize and Classify Reread and Explain Reread “Weird Records.” At the end of each sentence that includes an oral vocabulary word, stop and repeat the explanation of the word. Then reread the sentence. Use a Graphic Organizer Use the graphic organizer and the questions below to reinforce understanding of the relationship between each word and the category. Can you describe an extraordinary event that happened on your favorite show? (Answers will vary.) Words About Size and Strength extremely adv. very We had to work extremely hard to fi nish the project on time. gigantic adj. huge The building is so gigantic it can hold twelve large airplanes. immense adj. bigger than the usual size The immense car was too big to fi t into most garages. mighty adj. strong and powerful The mighty African elephant can knock trees down by leaning on them. miniature adj. tiny Some people buy miniature houses and collect small pieces of furniture to put inside them. towered v. so tall it stood high above others The huge building towered over others in the area. What are some examples of things that are gigantic? Read Aloud Explain that you will read aloud a story about Paul Bunyan and how words about size and strength are helpful in describing him. Guide Partner Activities Have partners work together to complete each of the activities below. Circulate and listen to partners as they work. Provide corrective feedback. Categorize Work with a partner to list three mighty characters that you have read about. What does being extremely strong allow them to do? In what ways are they superior to other characters? Draw Draw a picture of an immense thing that towers over other things. Make sure your drawing shows both gigantic and miniature things. Write Write about an extraordinary experience you’ve had. Be sure to include the words incredible and sensational. Describe With your partner, talk or write about what it would be like to be the strongest second grader in the world. Explain what you would do with your tremendous strength. Would others see you as a popular fi gure? Assess To assess what word meanings children have learned, copy and distribute the Pretest/ Posttest on pages 142–143. Use page 87 to administer the test. Compare scores with Day 1 assessment.
