Use page 89 to administer the test. Explain Write each oral vocabulary word below on the board. Read it aloud. Offer an explanation and a brief example for each word. Words About Space asteroid n. a rocky object in space that is smaller than a planet The asteroid just missed hitting Mars. craters n. large holes in the ground caused by things hitting the ground very hard The Moon is covered with craters. instruments n. tools for doing certain jobs They studied Mars with special instruments. launch n. the sending of something into the air or into space The rocket is ready for launch. mission n. a special task, often involving travel The astronauts went on a mission to study the Moon. weightless adj. not pulled to the ground by gravity She fl oated weightless in space. Discuss Guide children to see the relationship between each word and the category. Ask questions such as these: Have you ever seen the launch of a spaceship? How do you think it would feel to be weightless? Read Aloud Explain that you will read aloud a story about a girl who goes to the Moon. Then read aloud “Space Girl.” Discuss the Comprehension questions. Categorize and Classify Reread and Explain Reread “Space Girl.” At the end of each sentence that includes an oral vocabulary word, stop and repeat the explanation of the word. Then reread the sentence. Use a Graphic Organizer Use the graphic organizer and the questions below to reinforce understanding of the relationship between each word and the category. Words About Exploring Space Words About What Is in Space craters weightless asteroid mission launch instruments 1. If you could go on a mission into space, where would you go? (Answers will vary.) 2. What other words can you use to talk about what is in space? Add these to the graphic organizer as children suggest them. Words About Dreams challenge v. to try to get someone to do something new or diffi cult I challenge you to run from here to there without stopping. dream n. something you want to have happen Stan’s dream is to become President of the United States. encourage v. to try to get someone to do something and to support them in doing it Mary tried to encourage him to do his best. goal n. something you want to do Fran’s goal was to win the race. obstacles n. things in the way She needed to get around the obstacles in the road. wish v. to want something to be true I wish I could play the guitar. Examples Work with a partner. Make a list of three goals you have for the future. Draw Draw a picture of a rocket ship launch. Then draw a picture of an astronaut fl oating weightless in outer space. Show an asteroid in the distance. Describe Talk to your partner about a person who challenges you to make your dreams come true. Use these words: encourage, obstacles, wish. Role-Play Imagine that you are an astronaut. Your mission is to study the Moon and its craters. Show how you would use your instruments to study it. Word Parts The suffi x -less means “without.” The word weightless means “without weight.” Work with a partner. Think of three other words that you could be “without,” such as sleep. Add -less to each one. Then use a dictionary or a glossary to check the words you made.
