Words About Making Things Alike and Different contrast n. something that is different from another thing Our new school was a contrast to our old school. mimic v. to copy Some artists mimic the style of others. resemble v. to look like Do you think I resemble my dad? simulate v. to seem to be like something else She painted the ceiling with stars to simulate the night sky. uniform adj. the same He tried to paint the whole wall a uniform shade of green. unique adj. unlike any other My sister has a unique way of dressing. vary v. to make different I try to vary the kinds of foods I eat. Discuss Guide children to see the relationship between each word and the category. Ask questions such as this: How would you feel if someone tried to mimic everything you did? Read Aloud Explain that you will read aloud a story about the history of comic strips. Then read aloud “One Hundred Years of Comic Strips.” Discuss the Comprehension questions. Categorize and Classify Reread and Explain Reread “One Hundred Years of Comic Strips.” At the end of each sentence that includes an oral vocabulary word, stop and repeat the explanation of the word. Use the defi nitions and examples from Day 1 and Day 3. Guide Partner Activities Have partners work together to complete each of the activities below. Circulate and listen to partners as they work. Provide corrective feedback. Draw Draw a picture that resembles you. Use the picture to show something that is particular about you. Role-Play Work with your partner. Mimic everything your partner does. Try to move and speak in identical ways so that you are mirroring your partner. Then alter what you are doing so that it varies from what your partner is doing. Compare Think of two stories that show a lot of originality. Then think of two stories that seem boring and unoriginal. Are the original stories a contrast to the unoriginal ones? Explain. Describe Tell your partner a story about two people who had almost exactly the same things happen to them one day. What was parallel about their lives? Write Write a story about someone who wants to be an artist but doesn’t have any good ideas and just copies others. Use these words: simulate, uniform, emulate, replicas, unique. Assess To assess what word meanings children have learned, copy and distribute the Pretest/ Posttest on pages 104–105. Use page 68 to administer the test. Compare scores with Day 1 assessment.
