Words About Bad Feelings contempt n. a lack of respect She looked around the dirty room with contempt. despise v. to hate I despise having to do chores. dismay n. fear, worry, or sadness Carlos felt dismay when he was chosen last. fury n. violent anger; rage Dina shouted with fury when Sue insulted her again. grimly adv. gloomily; unhappily I grimly took my medicine. irritate v. to make angry My brother can always irritate me. scornfully adv. with disrespect and dislike Tim laughed scornfully at Alan’s bad joke. strident adj. loud; harsh The strident sound made me cover my ears. wry adj. amused at a bad situation He had a wry smile over missing the fi eld trip. Discuss Guide children to see the relationship between each word and the category. Read Aloud Explain that you will read aloud a story about a girl who is mad at her friend. Then read aloud “The Broken Promise.” Discuss the Comprehension questions. Categorize and Classify Reread and Explain Reread “The Broken Promise.” At the end of each sentence that includes an oral vocabulary word, stop and repeat the explanation of the word. Provide corrective feedback. Categorize Work with a partner. Make a list of three reasons to feel sympathy for someone. Then make a list of three reasons to despise doing something. Describe Work with a partner. Describe ways to use good etiquette when you get acquainted with someone. How can you make sure your interactions don’t cause tension? Write Write about two people who don’t like each other at fi rst but end up faithful friends. Use these words: reception, contempt, fury, irritate, confronting, wry. Draw Draw a picture of all the people in your household. Role-Play Show how you would look if you felt dismay. Now tell your partner about something that bothers you, in a strident voice. Word Parts The suffi x -ly can mean “in a certain way.” The word grimly means “in an unhappy way.” The suffi x -ful means “full of.” Separate scornfully into its parts. Then try adding -ly, -ful, or both suffi xes to three new words. Assess To assess, copy and distribute the Pretest/Posttest on pages 136–137. Use page 84 to administer the test.
