HomeMy WebLinkAboutRead Aloud Book Gr. K-Lesson 2Playing in the water can be a lot of fun, but it can also be very dangerous.
That’s why it is important for everyone to learn how to swim. Swimming is a
very important skill.
You can take swimming lessons at a pool in your town. You can also take
them at some beaches. When you take a swimming lesson, the teacher will
fi rst tell you rules about water safety. Everyone must follow these water safety
rules. These rules help make sure that no one gets hurt. One of the most
important rules is never to swim alone. You should always have an adult with
you. Another important rule is never to push someone into the water. You also
should not grab people or jump on them in the water. These rules help prevent
accidents from happening. Following them will help make your time in the
water safer and more fun.
You should only swim when a lifeguard is on duty. A lifeguard is a really good
swimmer. A lifeguard can rescue someone who has trouble swimming. The
lifeguard watches all the swimmers and makes sure everyone is following
the rules. You should always pay close attention to the lifeguard, because he or
she will let you know if you are in danger and then give you some help.
Swimming instructors are teachers who help you learn to swim. They teach
you how to kick your feet and move your arms so that you stay afl oat in the
water. Often swimming instructors use water games to help you practice
swimming. Some swimming instructors even use toys or equipment, such as
fl ippers or kickboards, to teach different swimming skills.
Swimming lessons can be a lot of hard work, but once you have learned
to swim, you will have a lot of fun splashing around in the water on hot
summer days.

One day, as George was getting home from school, his dad was waiting for
him in the kitchen. Dad said, “I have some news, George. We’ll be moving to a
new house next month.”
George looked surprised. “But where will I go to school?” he asked.
Dad answered, “You’ll be going to a new school.”
George was shocked. He never saw this coming. He liked his school. He liked
his friends. He didn’t want to move.
George felt furious about the move. He frowned and stomped around the
house. He told his mother he would not move.
Mom said, “I know it’s hard, George. But you’ll make new friends at your
new school. You’ll see.”
George pouted and grumbled, but over the next few weeks he got ready for
the move. He packed his things in boxes. He said goodbye to his friends.
When they settled into the new house, Dad took George to his new school.
George met his new teacher, Mrs. Hart. She assigned a desk to George. Then
Mrs. Hart said, “Tomorrow you can meet Allen. He is a new student just like you.”
George was curious to meet Allen. “Where is Allen from?” he wondered.
“What does he like to do? Maybe we can be friends.”
The next day, Mrs. Hart introduced George and Allen. The boys found out
that they both liked baseball and comic books. Mrs. Hart assigned Allen the
seat next to George. The two boys ate lunch together. They told each other
their phone numbers so they could play together on the weekends.
George got up early the next morning. He got dressed and ate breakfast in
a hurry. He was impatient to get going.
Mom laughed. “Why are you in such a rush to get to school?” she asked.
“There’s another new boy at school. His name is Allen, and we’re already
friends. Maybe this new school won’t be so bad after all,” said George.
