HomeMy WebLinkAboutRead Aloud Book Gr. K-Lesson 16Have you ever looked at a map of Earth? Did you notice that a lot of the
map was blue? That’s because blue is the color of water, and water covers
most of Earth. What the map does not show you is that all this water is always
moving.
Most of the water on Earth is found in the huge oceans. The oceans are very
deep. The deepest spot in the ocean is almost seven miles deep. If the tallest
mountain went underwater in this spot, the top of the mountain would still
be a mile below the surface of the water! The oceans are also very wide. All
across the wide oceans, the water is moving. Earth is always spinning in space.
This spinning makes the ocean water keep moving. Because Earth never stops
spinning, the water never stops moving.
The oceans’ water doesn’t just fl ow around. It also rises into the sky! How
can water rise into the sky? The hot sun heats the top of the water. Some of
the water gets so hot that it turns into a gas, like the steam from a kettle. This
process is called evaporation.
But the water’s trip doesn’t stop there. Wind blows the water in the air. The
water in the air collects together to make clouds. Then the water falls from the
clouds. It falls to the ground as rain or snow. Once the water is on the ground,
it fl ows down hills into small streams. These streams eventually join together to
form larger rivers. Sometimes water collects in low places on the land. These
bodies of water can be small ponds or huge lakes. Some lakes are hundreds of
miles across! Rivers fl ow out of lakes and empty their water back into the oceans.
Water is always moving. Water’s trip is very important. The trip cleans the
water so we can drink it. It also brings the water to plants so they can grow. If
water didn’t move, we couldn’t live!
COMPREHENSION Retell how water moves from the ocean to the land
and then back to the ocean again. In what ways is a river different from
a stream? In what ways is a lake different from a pond?

A Special Bone
One afternoon, Vince was walking his dog, Sparky. Sparky was sniffi ng the
ground as he walked. Suddenly, Sparky sprinted into a sand pit beside the
road. Vince followed along. He wondered what Sparky was running after.
In the sand pit, Sparky began to dig. Sand fl ew from his paws in every
direction. Then Sparky grabbed something in his mouth. Vince bent down to
see what Sparky had found. It was a giant bone. It looked very old.
“This looks important,” thought Vince. He felt excited. He took the bone home.
At home, Vince pulled out his science kit. Inside the box was a ruler and a
magnifying glass. Vince measured the bone with the ruler. Then he looked at
the bone with his magnifying glass. Tiny cracks and spots on the bone looked
huge under the glass. Vince went to tell his mom and dad about the bone.
Mom and Dad took a careful look at the bone. They turned it this way and
that. They studied the bone for several minutes. Mom thought they should
bring the bone to the science museum. Maybe a scientist who knew a lot
about bones could tell them what kind of bone this was.
Vince, Mom, and Dad went to the science museum. They showed the bone to
a scientist named Dr. Tanner. Vince explained about the tiny cracks and spots
he had seen. Dr. Tanner said that Vince had made a good observation. He
thought Vince was smart to pay attention to these details.
Dr. Tanner asked Vince if he could keep the bone for a few days. He would
try to fi nd out what kind of bone it was.
The next day, Dr. Tanner called Vince on the phone. He had some important
news. Dr. Tanner said that the bone Vince found was a real dinosaur bone!
The dinosaur bone was put on display at the science museum. Next to it,
there was a sign that said, “Found by Sparky and Vince.” Vince brought all his
friends to see it.
COMPREHENSION What words tell you how Vince and his parents
study the bone? Do you think Vince and Sparky will want to go exploring
again? Why or why not?
