HomeMy WebLinkAboutRead Aloud Book Gr. K-Lesson 22Millions of years ago, before there were humans on Earth, there were
dinosaurs. When most people think of dinosaurs, they think of their huge
size. But not all dinosaurs were the same size. Some dinosaurs were small,
and some dinosaurs were giant. Plus, some dinosaurs fl ew in the air and
others walked on the ground. Some dinosaurs ate meat and others ate plants.
Scientists are still not sure how many kinds of dinosaurs there were, but they
do know that each one was different from the next.
Diplodocus was a very big dinosaur. It was over 120 feet long. That’s longer
than three school buses parked one behind the other! Diplodocus had a wide
body, a long tail, a long neck, and a small head. Diplodocus walked on four
legs and used its long neck to reach the plants it ate.
Tyrannosaurus rex, or T. rex, was over forty feet long and twenty feet tall. It
was one of the biggest meat-eating dinosaurs. That means it hunted and ate
other dinosaurs. Tyrannosaurus rex was shaped differently than Diplodocus.
Because it needed to be able to run fast to catch other dinosaurs, Tyrannosaurus
rex walked on two long legs. It also had a big head and razor-sharp teeth.
Ankylosaurus was a slow-moving dinosaur. It was about thirty-fi ve feet
long, like T. rex, but only four feet high. That’s only a little bigger than you!
Ankylosaurus ate only plants, so it didn’t need to be big enough to hunt other
dinosaurs. But it still needed to be able to protect itself from bigger, meat-
eating dinosaurs like Tyrannosaurus rex. So Ankylosaurus had tough plates on
its back, like a turtle’s shell. This hard covering kept it safe.
Lesothosaurus was one of the smallest dinosaurs. It was only about three
feet long. It walked on two feet, like a T. rex, and ate plants, like an Ankylosaurus.
Lesothosaurus was weaker than most other dinosaurs. It was not strong
enough to fi ght them and win. But Lesothosaurus was a very fast runner. It
was faster than many of the big dinosaurs. It could run away to save itself.
Dinosaurs aren’t living on Earth anymore, but scientists have been able to
fi nd old dinosaurs in the ground. Visit a museum sometime to see the shapes
and sizes of these creatures yourself!

One day, a farmer’s little girl put her puppy on a leash and walked it
outside. Right away, the puppy began to pull her. The puppy pulled very hard.
He pulled so hard that the leash broke. And once he was free, the puppy
hopped into a fi eld of corn.
“Come back to me, puppy! Don’t run away!” cried the little girl. But the
puppy was already gone.
The puppy kept running, all by himself. Soon he came to a big red barn. The
puppy went inside. There, he found three little kittens. The puppy wanted to
play with them.
He tried to play with the fi rst kitten. The puppy rolled on the ground and
pushed the fi rst kitten with his paws. He only meant to play. But the puppy was
much bigger than the kitten. He pushed the kitten too hard, and it fell into a
bowl of milk. The kitten meowed and went to hide under a pile of hay.
So the puppy tried to ask the second kitten to play. He did this by barking
loudly. This frightened the kitten. Instead of playing with the puppy, the kitten
turned around and ran away from him.
The third kitten was the last one left for the puppy to play with. It was the
littlest kitten of all. It was trying to reach a feather. The feather was up on a
shelf. It was too high for the little kitten to get to. It was not too high for the
puppy to reach, though. So he reached up and pushed the feather off the
shelf. It fl oated down. Both the littlest kitten and the puppy tried to catch it.
Soon they were playing. They took turns grabbing the feather and chasing
each other. Afterward, they were so tired that they both fell asleep in a pile of
hay.
A while later, the farmer’s little girl found her puppy sleeping with the kitten.
“Look at that!” she laughed. “My puppy thinks he’s a kitten!”
