She was feeling somewhat nervous. “I want to be the perfect pet,” Jazz said to herself as she rode in the car. She went to live with the Norton family. Mr. and Mrs. Norton were happy to have Jazz in their home. Their children, Sean and Lucy, were happy to have Jazz, too. First, Jazz saw Sean. He looked like he needed a friend. Jazz wanted to be Sean’s buddy. So she ran up to Sean and licked his face. Only, Sean’s glasses got in the way. “Jazz! You got my glasses dirty,” Sean scolded. “That was not a perfect thing to do,” thought Jazz. Then Jazz saw Mrs. Norton. Mrs. Norton was reading a book in a big chair. Jazz thought she and Mrs. Norton could sit together. It would be nice to sit side by side. So Jazz jumped up on the chair. She knocked the book out of Mrs. Norton’s hands. “Jazz! You made me drop my book!” said Mrs. Norton. “That was not a perfect thing to do,” thought Jazz. Then Lucy took Jazz for a walk. Jazz thought they could both run down the street. The two of them could get some exercise. So Jazz ran fast, dragging Lucy behind her. “Slow down, Jazz! You’re pulling my arm,” called Lucy. “That was not a perfect thing to do,” thought Jazz. When they got home, Jazz saw Mr. Norton washing the car. Jazz thought they could wash the car together. She could be his partner! Jazz took hold of the sponge with her teeth and ran around the car. “Jazz! Come back with that sponge!” yelled Mr. Norton. “That was not a perfect thing to do,” thought Jazz. Jazz lay down and frowned. She felt sad. She was not the perfect pet after all. Just then, the family came to fi nd Jazz. “You do some crazy things, Jazz,” said Sean. “But we love you no matter what,” Lucy said. Each family member hugged Jazz. She thought, “With a family like this, who needs to be perfect?” COMPREHENSION What does Jazz do to try to be the perfect pet? What do you think Jazz will learn as she grows up? 54 55 Michelle Kwan Have you ever seen an ice skater jump, spin, and fl ip? It takes a lot of hard work and practice to learn how to do these things. And Michelle Kwan knew she wanted to learn these ice-skating moves when she was just fi ve years old. She would watch her older brother play hockey and want to wear ice skates herself. From then on, Michelle worked hard to become an award-winning skater. Michelle did her hard work while she was growing up in California. Along with her brother, she lived with her mother, her father, and her sister. These people made up her family. When Michelle was eight years old, she began training with an ice-skating coach. She practiced three to four hours each day! Michelle’s parents worked many jobs to pay for her skating lessons and the time at the skating rink. Michelle quickly became an excellent ice skater. She won her fi rst world skating competition when she was only fourteen years old. She was named the World Junior Figure Skating Champion. But this was just the beginning. She worked even harder to get better and better. Soon, Michelle skated in front of large audiences. Many people watched Michelle perform at skating competitions. She could be called an entertainer because people loved to watch her perform. She could glide gracefully across the ice and amaze her audience with her jumps and spins. As of today, Michelle has earned the most medals of any American skater at the World Championships. She has also skated in the Olympics! She won a silver medal in 1998 for coming in second place, and she won a bronze medal in 2002 for coming in third place. Michelle continues to do great things. She has been in the cartoon television series, Arthur. She still tours the United States, performing in many ice-skating shows. And there has even been a book written about her. The book is titled The Winning Attitude: What It Takes to Be a Champion. Many people believe that Michelle Kwan is one of the greatest fi gure skaters ever!
