Use page 64 to administer the test. Explain Write each oral vocabulary word below on the board. Read it aloud. Offer an explanation and a brief example for each word. Words About Size enormous adj. very big The skyscraper is an enormous building. large adj. big We need a large van to carry eight people. little adj. not big The little cat sleeps on a pillow. small adj. not big A mouse is a small animal. Discuss Guide children to see the relationship between each word and the category. Prompt them to use the words to describe objects in the classroom. Then ask: Can something enormous fi t in your hand? Read Aloud Explain that you will read aloud a story about a small pet hamster that goes to school in an unusual way. Then read aloud “Runaway Hamster.” Discuss the Comprehension questions. Categorize and Classify Reread and Explain Reread “Runaway Hamster.” At the end of each sentence that includes an oral vocabulary word, stop and repeat the explanation of the word. Then reread the sentence. Use a Graphic Organizer Use the graphic organizer and the questions below to reinforce understanding of the relationship between each word and the category. Offer an explanation and a brief example for each word. (Sample answer: to be safe) Deepen Understanding Review Repeat explanations for all oral vocabulary words. Use the defi nitions and examples from Day 1 and Day 3. Guide Partner Activities Have partners work together to complete each of the activities below. Circulate and listen to partners as they work. Provide corrective feedback. Examples What do people sometimes do at the beach or at a pool? Tell your partner. Role-Play Show how you might pick up a little puppy. Then show how your face might look if the puppy suddenly barked at you. Describe Talk to your partner. Describe something fun you are going to do soon. Tell how you feel about waiting until it is time to do that. Compare Talk with your partner. Compare the size of a bear to the size of a rabbit. Use these words: large, small. Draw Draw a picture of something enormous. Tell your partner about it. Assess To assess what word meanings children have learned, copy and distribute the Pretest/ Posttest on pages 96–97.
