Use page 78 to administer the test. Explain Write each oral vocabulary word below on the board. Read it aloud. Offer an explanation and a brief example for each word. Words About Nature branches n. parts of a tree that grow out from the trunk Some of the branches of the tree were high off the ground. environment n. all of the things around where someone or something lives Frogs live in an environment with water, rocks, and plants. insects n. small animals with six legs and usually wings Butterfl ies are insects. leaves n. fl at, thin parts of a tree The leaves on the tree turned red in the fall. soil n. dirt Garden plants need good soil to grow in. Discuss Guide children to see the relationship between each word and the category. If possible, point outside to a tree and prompt them to describe the tree and its environment. If not possible, ask them to close their eyes and imagine trees and what surrounds them, before describing them. Read Aloud Explain that you will read aloud a story about how bees and fruit trees work together in nature. Then read aloud “Peaches and Bees.” Discuss the Comprehension questions. Categorize and Classify Reread and Explain Reread “Peaches and Bees.” At the end of each sentence that includes an oral vocabulary word, stop and repeat the explanation of the word. Then reread the sentence. Use a Graphic Organizer Use the graphic organizer and the questions below to reinforce understanding of the relationship between each word and the category. (Sample answers: on tree branches; on plants; on the ground) 3. Why do some birds live in an environment with trees? Have you ever looked for shapes in the clouds? Read Aloud Explain that you will read aloud a story about a sister and brother who explore nature together. Then read aloud “What’s in the Field?” Discuss the Comprehension questions. (Sample answer: the woods, because you could discover all kinds of plants and bugs there) Deepen Understanding Review Repeat explanations for all oral vocabulary words. Use the defi nitions and examples from Day 1 and Day 3. Guide Partner Activities Have partners work together to complete each of the activities below. Circulate and listen to partners as they work. Provide corrective feedback. Categorize Work with a partner. Name three things in the classroom environment. Then name three places to go on an exploration. Tell which place would be your fi rst choice. Examples What are some insects you have seen? Tell your partner. Role-Play Show how you would look if a rain cloud showed up during a picnic. Now show how you would look if a breeze blew the cloud away. Describe Talk to your partner. Describe a fi eld near where you live. What grows there? What lives there? Draw Draw a picture of a plant growing in soil. Include leaves on the plant. Share your picture with a partner and tell about it. Discuss Work with a partner. Create a story about an animal that lives in the branches of a tree. Draw a picture to go with your story. Assess To assess what word meanings children have learned, copy and distribute the Pretest/ Posttest on pages 124–125. Use page 78 to administer the test. Compare scores with Day 1 assessment.
