Use page 88 to administer the test. Explain Write each oral vocabulary word below on the board. Read it aloud. Offer an explanation and a brief example for each word. Words About Learning education n. what you have when someone teaches you I will get a good education if I pay attention in class and do all my work. know v. to understand I know how to ride a bike because I learned last year. learning v. understanding and using what someone teaches you The boys and girls in my class are learning how to read. think v. to have an idea or picture in your mind I like to think about driving race cars. thought n. an idea Dad had a thought about what to cook for dinner. Discuss Guide children to see the relationship between each word and the category. Ask them to talk about something they are learning in school. Prompt them to use each of the words. Read Aloud Explain that you will read aloud a story about how the youngest child in a family learns to do something that helps his dad. Then read aloud “Too Little.” Discuss the Comprehension questions. Categorize and Classify Reread and Explain Reread “Too Little.” At the end of each sentence that includes an oral vocabulary word, stop and repeat the explanation of the word. Then reread the sentence. Use a Graphic Organizer Use the graphic organizer and the questions below to reinforce understanding of the relationship between each word and the category. Words About Ideas think thought learning know 1. What are some things you are learning to do now? (Sample answer: read, swim, ride a bike) 2. Some people teach what they know to other people. Offer an explanation and a brief example for each word. Read Aloud Explain that you will read aloud a selection about how calling 9-1-1 in an emergency is a good way to help. Guide Partner Activities Have partners work together to complete each of the activities below. Circulate and listen to partners as they work. Provide corrective feedback. Examples Give examples of things that you believe you are big enough to do. Explain to a partner why you are not too little to do these things. Describe What do you know now that you did not know when you started kindergarten? Describe what you learned to your partner. Use the following words: education, knowledge, remembered, think, thought. Discuss Tell your partner about some ideas you have about what you will learn in fi rst grade. What will you know at the end of that year? Role-Play Demonstrate for a partner some things you are learning to do at home. Then ask your partner to show that he or she understands what you are demonstrating. Assess To assess what word meanings children have learned, copy and distribute the Pretest/ Posttest on pages 144–145. Use page 88 to administer the test. Compare scores with Day 1 assessment.
