Use page 91 to administer the test. Explain Write each oral vocabulary word below on the board. Read it aloud. Offer an explanation and a brief example for each word. Words About a Party celebrate v. to have a party She will celebrate at her friend’s birthday party. party n. when people get together to have fun Sue invited friends to her house for a party. photograph n. a picture made by a camera I have a photograph of my family. surprised adj. how you feel when something you didn’t know about suddenly happens I was surprised when Mom said we were going to the circus. wrapped adj. covered by paper or cloth Children brought wrapped presents to the birthday party. Discuss Guide children to see the relationship between each word and the category. Ask: Who can tell me about a time when someone celebrated a birthday? What happened at the party? Prompt children to use the other words. Read Aloud Explain that you will read aloud a story about a party in a kindergarten class on the last day of school. Then read aloud “The Last Day of School.” Discuss the Comprehension questions. Categorize and Classify Reread and Explain Reread “The Last Day of School.” At the end of each sentence that includes an oral vocabulary word, stop and repeat the explanation of the word. Then reread the sentence. Use a Graphic Organizer Use the graphic organizer and the questions below to reinforce understanding of the relationship between each word and the category. Words About Choices choices n. different things you can do or have You have many choices of what to do at our class activity centers. decide v. to make up your mind; to choose one thing to do or have Did you decide to eat an apple or a peach? information n. what you need to know; facts The information about the fi eld trip is in the letter. judge v. to listen or look at in order to decide My mom will judge how much food I need for lunch. or conj. a word that tells there is a choice I will buy you a book, a puzzle, or crayons. Discuss Guide children to see the relationship between each word and the category. Ask questions such as these: What choices do we make in our classroom? What information do I give you? What do you decide to do? Read Aloud Explain that you will read aloud a selection about how children made choices before a kindergarten talent show. Then read aloud “Kindergarten Talent Show.” Discuss the Comprehension questions. Categorize Work with a partner. List three things you could take a photograph of at a party. Examples Give your partner two choices of something nice to have. Use the word or between the choices. Have your partner decide which choice to make. For example, do you want a rocket or an airplane? Describe Talk to your partner. Describe a time you celebrated something special. Draw Remember a time when your family members surprised you by giving you something they had wrapped. Draw a picture to show this and tell about it. Write Tell your teacher your address and telephone number. Have her write this information on a card. Discuss How do you judge what is the best kind of pet to own? Tell your partner about this pet. Explain why it is the best. Assess To assess what word meanings children have learned, copy and distribute the Pretest/ Posttest on pages 150–151. Use page 91 to administer the test.
