TITLE: Newcomer Center Teacher.
II. QUALIFICATIONS:
A. Idaho Elementary Teacher Certification with an endorsement in Early Childhood is preferred. Additional or ALTERNATE TRAINING in English as a Second Language (ESL) or Bilingual Education
may be acceptable.
Bilingual in English and Spanish (verbal and written language).
Be familiar with and provide for the special needs of English Language Learners (ELL) students.
Ability to work and communicate with staff, students, parents, and the public.
Willingness to learn and use English as a Second Language (ESL) methods and materials to teach basic language and other skills to ELL students.
Computer knowledge and experience with work processing, e-mail, spreadsheets, etc.
Knowledge and skill in the teaching and use of math and reading including the ability to pronounce vowels, consonants, phrases, and words in a phonetically correct manner.
Previous experience preferred, but not mandatory.
Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Board may find appropriate and acceptable.
REPORTS TO: Building Administrator.
JOB GOALS:
To support the delivery of School District 91’s written, taught, tested and reported curriculum and contribute to maximizing student achievement as tested with the Idaho Standards Achievement
Test.
To assist ELL students in grades one through six more rapidly assimilate survival English skills.
MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Provides ESL services to eligible ELL students according to their unique needs.
Observes and records ELL students’ progress in academic and language areas.
Attends Parent Teacher Conferences for ELL students.
Attends inservice classes, building meetings, monthly program meetings and district meetings.
Communicates with ELL students’ regular classroom teacher.
Facilitates students’ active participation in cooperative groups.
Assists the Federal Programs Office in gathering a variety of data that is needed for reporting to state and/or federal agencies..
Administers pre and post-test of the Woodcock Munoz Language Survey.
Is part of the network to contact ELL students’ homes.
Operates equipment (i.e. tape recorders, VCR’s, overhead projectors and copy machine)s.
Participates in the school as a regular part of the staff and accepts supervision and other duties as requested.
Provides translation and interpretation services when requested for ELL students or parents.
Explains and re-teaches concepts to ELL students in another language (i.e. Spanish).
Constructs learning materials and prepares classroom setting.
Orders materials and supplies through Building Administrator.
Supervises students during recess, before school and after school.
Maintains high standards of ethical behavior and confidentiality.
Performs all other duties as assigned consistent with the responsibilities of a teacher, the Idaho Code of Ethics, and the negotiated contract.
TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:
The exact terms of this position will be determined by the needs of the students and budgetary constraints. Salary will be in accordance with the placement on the Teacher’s Salary
Schedule commensurate with years of experience and education.
EVALUATION:
Performance of this position will be evaluated annually by the Building Administrator in accordance with provisions of the negotiated master agreement and board policy.
