TITLE: Substitute Custodian
QUALIFICATIONS:
High School Diploma preferred.
Read and write at a minimum of a 9th grade level.
Physically capable of performing assigned tasks.
Able to work with staff, students and the public.
Mechanical aptitude.
Capable of lifting up to 55 pounds.
Available to work on short notice in any custodial assignment.
Previous experience preferred, but not mandatory.
Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Board may find appropriate and acceptable.
REPORTS TO: Director of Operations/Head Custodian.
JOB GOALS:
To support the delivery of School District 91’s written, taught, tested and reported curriculum and contribute to maximizing student achievement.
To maintain the physical school facilities in a condition of operating excellence, cleanliness, and safety, so that full educational use may be made at all times.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Maintains and services gas, coal, electric or other type heating or air conditioning systems. Makes minor and routine adjustments to heating and ventilating equipment, clears and services
pumps and filters, conducts tests of the equipment in the entire system for operational efficiency.
Participates in cleaning and custodial activities such as mopping, scrubbing, waxing, and polishing floors and furniture; washing windows; assembling, disassembling and moving furniture;
sweeping and cleaning walks; removing snow in accordance with District policy; and otherwise keeping the equipment and premises in a clean and orderly condition. Also may assign, supervise
and inspect the work of custodial personnel engaged in these tasks.
Makes minor plumbing repairs to toilets, showers, basins, drains, and drinking fountains. Makes minor electrical repairs and replaces fuses, light bulbs, switches and outlets. Performs
minor painting and carpentry tasks. Reports major repairs and maintenance work as needed. May be required to assist maintenance personnel on some repairs.
Receives school furniture orders. Supervises and assembles furniture for schools.
Distributes custodial supplies and equipment to custodial personnel and monitors their use.
Is responsible for learning all phases of custodial duties and procedures.
Maintains high standards of ethical behavior and confidentiality.
VI. OTHER DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Performs all other duties as assigned.
VII. TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:
This is an on-call position. Wages will be in accordance with the Classified Salary Schedule at a grade 3 step 0. Substitute custodians with 5 or more years of full- time district
experience be placed at a grade 5.
This is an “at will” position in that the employer or employee may terminate employment at any time, or for any reason consistent with applicable state or federal law. The “employment
at will” policy cannot be changed verbally or in writing, unless the change is specifically authorized in writing and expressly approved by the Board of Trustees of District 91.
EVALUATION:
Performance of this position will be evaluated by the Director of Operations in accordance with provisions of the Board’s policy on the evaluation of classified personnel.
This position has been given an overall physical classification of heavy duty.
1 – 33% 34 – 66% 67-100%
Heavy >50 pounds** 40 pounds 20 pounds
**Lifts over 50 pounds with proper body mechanics and 2 or more workers.
