HomeMy WebLinkAboutGrounds SupervisorMay 2009 TITLE: Grounds Supervisor QUALIFICATIONS: Minimum of a High School Diploma. Knowledge of grounds procedures, sprinkler systems and equipment. Ability to complete paperwork pertaining to the job. Capable of lifting up to 50 pounds. Must possess, or obtain within 6 months of hire date, a current Class B Commercial Drivers License (CDL). Ability to work with staff, students and the public and to supervise grounds personnel. Physically capable of performing assigned tasks. Ability to work overtime and flexible hours dependent on conditions (e.g. snow removal) Ability to set priorities and make decisions involving the Grounds Department. Five to ten years previous experience in landscaping and management preferred. Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Board may find appropriate and acceptable. REPORTS TO: Director of Operations JOB GOALS: To support the delivery of School District 91’s written, taught, tested and reported curriculum and contribute to maximizing student achievement. To maintain the grounds of all district schools in a condition of safety, neatness, and aesthetic attractiveness to that each student may be provided with an outdoor environment both pleasing in appearance and enjoyable for play. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Coordinates, supervises, and participates in the grounds maintenance and gardening work of the district’s schools and related facilities. Assigns duties to grounds personnel and inspects completed work. Confers with school principals, landscape architects, and other parties in making plans for landscaping, planning, and maintenance of various school grounds. Observes playgrounds for safety and proper installation/operation. Observes hard surface conditions and makes recommendations on repairs and replacement. Interprets plans and sketches in carrying out landscaping designs. Selects trees, shrubs, plants, and seeds appropriate for sowing. Instructs and assists in propagating and cultivating work required for various plants. Trains grounds personnel to perform skilled grounds duties as required. Prepares snow plowing, mowing and watering schedules and determines the need for spraying, fertilizing, and pruning. Orders supplies and equipment as needed. Establishes personnel schedules, and maintains such personnel records as are needed. Assists in recruiting, screening, recommending for hiring, and training of all grounds personnel. Maintains such personnel and other records as required. Completes annual performance evaluations on grounds personnel. Advises on the hiring of contractors to perform certain ground services. Obtains specifications for bidding purposes and obtains quotes and bids for jobs. Maintains high standards of ethical behavior and confidentiality. Has regular and predictable attendance. OTHER DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Performs all other duties as assigned. TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: This position is scheduled for 8 hours per day, 260 days per year. Monday through Friday is considered the normal workweek. Emergency conditions may arise that will require attention at any hour of the day or night. Benefits will be in accordance with approved Board policy. Wages will be in accordance with the Classified Salary Schedule as a Grade 9 to 11. This is an “at will” position in that the employer or employee may terminate employment at any time, or for any reason consistent with applicable state or federal law. The “employment at will” policy cannot be changed verbally or in writing, unless the change is specifically authorized in writing and expressly approved by the Board of Trustees of District 91. EVALUATION: Performance of this position will be evaluated annually by the Director of Operations in accordance with provisions of the Board’s policy on the evaluation of classified personnel. This position has been given an overall physical classification of heavy duty. 1 – 33% 34 – 66% 67-100% Heavy >50 pounds** 40 pounds 20 pounds **Lifts over 50 pounds with proper body mechanics and 2 or more workers. This position includes work that may be performed while sitting, standing, kneeling, squatting, or laying on the ground.
