TITLE: Bus Mechanic Supervisor
QUALIFICATIONS:
Proficiency in both diesel and gasoline engine repair, from the larger bus engine down to small air-cooled engines.
Ability to plan and implement a good maintenance program.
Must have or be able to acquire within eighteen (18) months, ASE Master School Bus Technician Certification.
Ability to use Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook) programs and fleet software.
High School Diploma preferred.
Physically capable of performing assigned tasks.
Ability to work with staff, students and the public.
Valid Idaho Class “B” commercial driver’s license with school bus, air brake, and passenger endorsement.
Required to have own tools.
Supervisory experience preferred, but not mandatory.
Ability to complete required paperwork.
Capable of lifting up to 50 pounds.
Previous experience mandatory.
Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Board may find appropriate and acceptable.
REPORTS TO: Transportation Supervisor.
JOB GOALS:
To support the delivery of School District 91’s written, taught, tested and reported curriculum and contribute to maximizing student.
To keep the District’s buses and cars in such a state of operating excellence that they present no problems or interruptions to the educational program.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Supervises and assigns repairs of district vehicles.
Reviews all work order requests and creates work orders as needed.
Reviews completed work orders insuring that parts and labor are listed correctly and enters the information into the fleet software program.
Reviews all shop invoices and notes the vehicle number before submission.
Maintains a preventive maintenance schedule on all vehicles.
Monitors employees’ work levels and reviews work performance. Plans and schedules the mechanics to stay current on ASE certifications.
Conducts and/or schedules employee training in shop safety.
Inspects, diagnoses, and makes necessary repairs and adjustments to trucks, school buses, cars, and other light and heavy equipment such as tractors and lawn mowing vehicles.
Establishes an efficient and effective system of routine automotive maintenance and preventative care.
Provides ongoing training to employees in proper maintenance and repair methods.
Maintains a current inventory of parts, supplies and equipment.
Sets up and supervises a system for the receipt and issuance of parts and supplies and the keeping of records and inventories.
Completes all required paperwork.
Stays current on the different types of buses/vehicles and the latest repair procedures available in the industry.
Assists in the recruitment, screening, training and evaluating of mechanics.
Promotes high standards of safety and good housekeeping methods in all work-connected areas.
Orders replacement parts.
Refuels and lubricates equipment.
Changes and repairs tires.
Inspects all school buses and vehicles for safety requirements in accordance with Idaho State Codes. Makes recommendations to the Transportation Supervisor of equipment requirements.
Maintains high standards of ethical behavior and confidentiality.
OTHER DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Performs all other duties as required.
TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:
This position is scheduled for 8 hours per day, 255 days per year. Monday through Friday is considered the normal workweek. Emergency conditions may arise that will require attention
at any hour of the day or night. Benefits will be in accordance with approved Board policy. Wages will be in accordance with the Transportation Salary Schedule as Grades 11-13.
This is an “at will” position in that the employer or employee may terminate employment at any time, or for any reason consistent with applicable state or federal law. This “employment
at will” policy cannot be changed verbally or in writing, unless the change is specifically authorized in writing and expressly approved by the Board of Trustees of District 91.
EVALUATION:
Performance of this position will be evaluated annually by the Transportation Supervisor in accordance with provisions of the Board’s policy on the evaluation of classified personnel.
This position is performed in a shop setting. A minimum of 50% of the time is spent on supervisory duties. Time will be spent working at a desk as well as working on school buses and
other district vehicles.
This position has been given an overall physical classification of heavy duty.
1 – 33% 34 – 66% 67-100%
Heavy >50 pounds** 40 pounds 20 pounds
**Lifts over 50 pounds with proper body mechanics and 2 or more workers.
