After the teacher took morning attendance, they lined up to get on the bus. Everyone got seated and the bus took off. After an hour they finally arrived at the zoo. The boys and girls scrambled off the bus. They entered the zoo gates and headed toward the animals. They saw massive elephants with long trunks. The elephants were munching on peanuts! They saw monkeys climbing in trees. The monkeys howled so loudly that some students covered their ears. They saw alligators peeking out of a pond. The boys and girls were glad that a fence kept them a safe distance from the hungry alligators! The second graders even saw a kangaroo with a baby in its pouch. The zookeeper told them that a baby kangaroo was called a joey. It was so small and cute! Many of the students had never seen such animals before. They wrote about the animals in their journals and drew pictures of them too. They did not want to forget what they had seen! Back at school, the students talked about the fieldtrip to the zoo. They shared their greatest memories of the day. Some read entries from their journals. Others showed their drawings of the animals. Their teacher asked them to vote on their favorite zoo animal. Almost every one of the students voted for the baby kangaroo. They all thought that it had been a super day!
