Every afternoon, she herded the goats from the goat barn to the pasture to graze. When it started to get dark, she herded them back to the barn. She enjoyed taking care of the animals, but she really wanted her own pet. She was sure that she could be a great pet owner, since her experience working on the farm had taught her to be responsible. She had tried to convince her parents several times, but it hadn’t worked yet. But, one day, when Samantha was least expecting it, her father surprised her with a pet rabbit. The rabbit had white fur and big, floppy ears. Samantha decided to name her Snowflake. A few days after Samantha had received her rabbit, she woke up late and dashed outside to complete her chores. Then she prepared for school and sprinted down the road to catch the school bus. When she returned from school, Samantha began her chores by bringing food to her rabbit. But when she got to the cage, she realized something was wrong. The cage door was open and her rabbit had disappeared! Samantha’s heart dropped as she realized that she must have left the cage open. Samantha searched all over the farm for Snowflake. She looked in the goat barn, the cow field, and under her dad’s truck. Samantha began to worry that Snowflake had fallen into the creek, and she ran back to the cage crying. As Samantha sank to the ground, she noticed Snowflake sitting in her cage eating lettuce. Snowflake must have hopped out of the cage earlier and then found her way back to her cage. Samantha smiled and vowed to be more careful in the future.
