Must possess verbal and written communication skills. Mechanical aptitude. Physically capable of performing assigned tasks. Ability to work with staff, students and the public. Supervisory skills. Capable of lifting up to 55 pounds. Knowledge of custodial procedures and equipment. The ability to work independently. Previous experience preferred, but not mandatory. Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Board may find appropriate and acceptable. REPORTS TO: Building Administrator. JOB GOALS: To support the delivery of School District 91’s written, taught, tested and reported curriculum and contribute to maximizing student achievement. To maintain the physical school facilities in a condition of operating excellence, cleanliness, and safety, so that full educational use of them may be made at all times. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Is responsible for the routine adjustments, servicing and programmed maintenance of heating, ventilating, lighting, and other building equipment. Coordinates and assists with the work of the building’s custodial staff in tasks, including but not limited to the following: mopping, scrubbing, waxing, and polishing floors and furniture; washing windows; uses proper sanitizing and deodorizing procedures; assembling, disassembling and moving furniture; sweeping and cleaning walks; removing snow in accordance with District policy; and keeping equipment and premises in a clean and orderly condition. Participates in building activities as necessary. (e.g. fire drills, lockdowns, assemblies. etc.) Responds to immediate safety and/or operational concerns (e.g. facility damage, injured and ill students, unauthorized persons, alarms, etc.) for the purpose of taking appropriate action to resolve immediate safety issues. Inspects the work of the building custodial staff. Replaces light bulbs, performs minor painting and carpentry tasks. Recognizes equipment malfunction and reports repair and maintenance work as needed. May be required to assist maintenance personnel on some repairs. Receives school furniture orders. Supervises and participates in the furniture assembly. Orders custodial equipment and supplies, distributes to custodial staff and monitors their use. Keeps time records for all custodial staff. Completes the Mechanical and Safety check list and the Energy check list as scheduled. Completes online Safe Schools training. Participates in interviews with custodial applicants and may make hiring recommendations. Orients and trains new custodial personnel. Familiarizes new employees with District policy and takes responsibility to see that these policies are carried out. Completes annual performance evaluations on custodial staff with the assistance of the building Principal. Checks building on weekends. Maintains high standards of ethical behavior and confidentiality. Has regular and predictable attendance. OTHER DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Performs all other duties as assigned. TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: This is a full-time position scheduled for 40 hours per week, 254 days per year. Monday through Friday is considered to be the normal workweek. Emergency conditions may arise which will require attention at any hour of the day or night. Benefits will be in accordance with approved Board policy. Wages will be in accordance with the Classified Salary Schedule as a Grade 9. This is an “at will” position in that the employer or employee may terminate employment at any time, or for any reason consistent with applicable state or federal law. The “employment at will” policy cannot be changed verbally or in writing, unless the change is specifically authorized in writing and expressly approved by the Board of Trustees of District 91. EVALUATION: Performance of this position will be evaluated quarterly by the Building Administrator in accordance with provisions of the Board’s policy on the evaluation of classified personnel. WORKING ENVIRONMENT: Occasionally subjected to mechanical and electrical hazards. The position also entails working both inside and outside of the building with extreme temperatures. Atmospheric conditions occasionally include fumes, dust and poor ventilation. Caution necessary to avoid harm from misuse of chemicals. This position has been given an overall physical classification of heavy duty. 1 – 33% 34 – 66% 67-100% Heavy >50 pounds** 40 pounds 20 pounds **Lifts over 50 pounds with proper body mechanics and 2 or more workers.
