Physically capable of performing assigned tasks. Mechanical aptitude. Ability to read and write and to understand operating instructions. Capable of lifting up to 50 pounds. Knowledge of installation and repair of sprinkler systems. Ability to work with staff, students and the public. Previous experience preferred, but not mandatory. Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Board may find appropriate and acceptable. REPORTS TO: Grounds Foreman JOB GOALS: To support the delivery of School District 91’s written, taught, tested and reported curriculum and contribute to maximizing student achievement. To maintain the ground of all district schools in a condition of safety, neatness and aesthetic attractiveness so that each student may be provided with an outdoor environment both pleasing in appearance and enjoyable for play. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Maintains the district’s automatic irrigation systems in proper operating condition. Develops and implements a routine schedule for checking and replacing irrigation sprinkler heads to avoid burned spots on the turf areas and in front of the buildings. Is responsible for upgrading the control systems of the irrigation systems. Monitors the warranty credits on sprinkler heads. Returns the sprinkler heads and other parts as necessary and insures that proper credit is received for heads and parts under warranty. Adjusts the control systems on the irrigation systems to not interfere with facility usage after working hours. Repairs control systems during the winter months. Removes snow and applies sand to district parking lots. Maintains high standards of ethical behavior and confidentiality. Has regular and predictable attendance. OTHER DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Performs all other duties as assigned. TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: This position is scheduled for 40 hours per week, April through October and 20 hours per week, November through March. Monday through Friday is considered the normal workweek. Emergency conditions may arise that will require attention at any hour of the day or night. Benefits will be in accordance with approved Board policy. Wages will be in accordance with the Classified Salary Schedule as a Grade 9. This is an “at will” position in that the employer or employee may terminate employment at any time or for any reason consistent with applicable state or federal law. The “employment at will” policy cannot be changed verbally or in writing, unless the change is specifically authorized in writing and expressly approved by the Board of Trustees of District 91. EVALUATION: Performance of this position will be evaluated annually by the Grounds Foreman in accordance with provisions of the Board’s policy on the evaluation of classified personnel. Physical Requirements: The Irrigation Specialist spends much of each day outdoors in all types of weather. It requires the ability to stand, kneel, squat, sit, or lay on stomach for extended periods of time. The following are some of the major physical requirements and the estimated percentage of time spent in each: Walking on uneven ground normally throughout the shift – 24% Shoveling earth to repair damaged sprinklers or pipes – 23% Lifting and moving pipes and pump equipment used for extration of water from holes and trenches – 8% Working in wet or flooded conditions repairing broken pipes – 8% Climbing on and off from tractors and in and out of service trucks – 3% Completing paperwork and other office duties – 8% Stooping or kneeling to repair control systems – 6% Working long hours in sitting position while plowing snow from parking lots – 5% Using heat torch for heating poly pipe to insert fittings into pipe – 5% Squatting, kneeling, bending, or laying on stomach over the edge of narrow trenches – 8% Shoveling or chipping snow and ice – 2% This position has been given an overall physical classification of heavy duty. 1 – 33% 34 – 66% 67-100% Heavy >50 pounds** 40 pounds 20 pounds **Lifts over 50 pounds with proper body mechanics and 2 or more workers.
