HomeMy WebLinkAboutMedia Center Specialist - ElemOctober 2008 TITLE: Media Center Specialist – Elementary QUALIFICATIONS: High School Diploma. Working knowledge of an elementary school media center. Ability to work with staff, students, and the public. Patient, yet firm. Demonstrated aptitude for the work to be performed. Physically able to perform assigned duties. Previous experience preferred, but not mandatory. Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Board may find appropriate and acceptable. REPORTS TO: Building Administrator. JOB GOALS: To support the delivery of School District 91’s written, taught, tested and reported curriculum and contribute to maximizing student achievement. To provide all students with an enriched library environment containing a wide variety of materials that will invite intellectual growth, and to aid all students in acquiring the skills needed to take full advantage of media center’s resources. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Operates and supervises the media center. Evaluates, selects, and requisitions new media center materials. Manages the media center budget. Assists teachers in the selection of books and other instructional materials, and makes media center materials available to supplement the instructional program. Informs teachers and other staff members concerning new materials in the media center. Maintains a comprehensive and efficient system for cataloging all media center materials and instructs teachers and students on use of the system. Promotes appropriate conduct of students using media center facilities. Counsels with and gives reading guidance to students who have special reading problems or unusual intellectual interests. Keeps bulletin boards and other displays current and attractive. Prepares and delivers lesson plans for all classes on a weekly basis. This includes story time and library skills training. Performs an annual inventory of media center materials. Trains volunteers in assigned tasks. Performs minor book repairs. Maintains the media center in a neat and attractive condition. Strives to maintain and improve job skills through inservice training programs and other means. Maintains high standards of ethical behavior and confidentiality. Has regular and predictable attendance. OTHER DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Performs all other duties as assigned. TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: The exact terms will be determined by the needs of the school and budgetary constraints. Wages will be in accordance with the Classified Salary Schedule as a Grade 5. This is an “at will” position in that the employer or employee may terminate employment at any time or for any reason consistent with applicable state or federal law. The “employment at will” policy cannot be changed verbally or in writing, unless the change is specifically authorized in writing and expressly approved by the Board of Trustees of District 91. EVALUATION: Performance of this position will be evaluated annually by the Building Administrator in accordance with provisions of the Board’s policy on the evaluation of classified personnel. This position has been given an overall physical classification of light duty. 1 – 33% 34 – 66% 67-100% Light 20 pounds 10 pounds < 1 pound Medium 40 pounds 20 pounds 10 pounds Heavy >50 pounds** 40 pounds 20 pounds **Lifts over 50 pounds with proper body mechanics and 2 or more workers.
