QUALIFICATIONS: High School Diploma. Current interpreter license from the State of Idaho Two years of interpreting experience. Ability to correctly use English grammar. Ability to work with staff, students and the public. Demonstrated aptitude for the work to be performed. Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Board may find appropriate and acceptable. REPORTS TO: Building Administrator. JOB GOALS: To support the delivery of School District 91’s written, taught, tested and reported curriculum and contribute to maximizing student achievement. “Educational Interpreter” means a person employed in the Idaho public schools to provide interpreting services to school aged students who are deaf, hard of hearing or deaf-blind and hearing participants and peers. The educational interpreter provides interpreting and/or translating and cultural bridging in the educational environment. This environment includes classroom, laboratory, field trip, assembly, students attending IEP meetings and other educational sites and activities. The educational interpreter is an integral member of the educational team. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Is knowledgeable of Idaho statues and requirements for educational interpreters. Interpret/transliterates instructional conversation that is voiced or signed in the classroom, using ALS, Signed English as appropriate for the student and determined in the IEP. Maintains current skills to provide accurate interpretation of conversation and instruction. Assists student in the expansion of their signing vocabulary and skills. Maintains familiarity with curriculum and content to appropriately sign technical terms and concepts. Prepare for classroom content with access to lesson plans and classroom materials. Follows the workday and schedule as determined and informs appropriate personnel of any departure from the schedule. Interprets conversations between student and peers, or peer conversations. Interprets field trips and after-school events that are school sponsored. Interprets environmental auditory cues (alarms, announcements, hallway noise…ect.) Adheres to the Educational Interpreter Performance Assessment Guidelines od Professional Conduct for Educational Interpreters. Establishes healthy boundaries between self and student to encourage student self-advocacy and independence. Work to establish and maintain communication with students, teachers, and educational staff, to be an effective team member. Function as a team member while maintaining confidentiality within the team. Directs any comments or questions regarding the deaf or hard of hearing students’ academic progress or other concerns to the appropriate teacher. Perform other reasonable duties during the work day that the immediate supervisor may assign. Has regular and predictable attendance. OTHER DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Performs all other duties as assigned. TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: This is a full-time position scheduled for 7 hours a day during the school year. Wages will be in accordance with the Classified Salary Schedule as a Grade 11 - $19.87 or $20.89 per hour depending on experience. Benefits will be in accordance with approved Board policy. This is an “at will” position in that the employer or employee may terminate employment at any time or for any reason consistent with applicable state or federal law. The “employment at will” policy cannot be changed verbally or in writing, unless the change is specifically authorized in writing and expressly approved by the Board of Trustees of District 91. EVALUATION: Performance of this position will be evaluated annually by the Building Administrator in accordance with provisions of the Board’s policy on the evaluation of classified personnel.
